New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill

New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, located in the heart of New England, beckons travelers with its diverse collection of plants, meticulously curated gardens, and immersive experiences. From vibrant floral displays to tranquil woodland trails, it offers a sanctuary for both avid plant enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. If you think botanic gardens are only good during warm months, let me show you how lovely a visit can be during winter.

The New England Botanic Garden is 200 acres and has 18 distinct gardens.

There’s nothing I like more than seeing fresh flowers during winter. I try to keep a vase of flowers in my kitchen every week so I can enjoy their color and scent.  The conservatory was a plant/flower haven and we loved seeing so many in bloom.

Nestled in the quaint town of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Great Wolf Lodge is the perfect destination for a family-friendly adventure and or some well-needed relaxation. This enchanting resort promises a magical escape from the everyday hustle and bustle. From its fun indoor water park to its charming accommodations and diverse amenities, it is a great place to make some memories. We first visited in 2017, when our daughters were ages 9 & 11. This time my 15-year-old and I were lucky to spend the night as part of a press trip in central Massachusetts. It’s great to see she had just as much fun as a teenager as she did a kid.

Pepper Pong

Pepper pong game kit

WHY TRAVELERS WILL LOVE THEM

I love how easy it is to bring this fun game anywhere. With a 10-second setup on any flat-ish surface, the game locations are endless.  We’ve used it on the boat, the kitchen island, a picnic table, and on a road trip.

So, is it a game for everyone? Described by many as a mash-up of pong & pickleball, everyone learns quickly, while experts are challenged to master the strategy of this spicy new game.

WHAT PRODUCTS DO WE LOVE?

Pepper Pong Full Set

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE SET?

Mullets (aka “paddles”) x4

The Mullets aren’t just paddles; they’re the heartbeat of Pepper Pong. Think pickleball meets ping pong in shapely design, with a generous oversized “sweet spot” making every hit resonate. Crafted for extended rallies and competitive matches spanning skill levels, their soft foam surface pairs seamlessly with the Peppers, offering silent yet spirited matches.

Balls (3 distinct speeds) x3

These aren’t your typical balls; they’re the secret sauce that sets this sport apart. Customize your game with varying speeds & bounce, thanks to their unique design. Soft, foamy, and crafted to let air flow, they promise a silent rally.

Fence (aka “net”)

The Fence is the unsung hero of Pepper Pong. Forget those flimsy nets and pesky clamps. This stand-alone marvel stands tall and proud, always battle-ready. No droopiness here; just sheer determination. And when the game’s done? It packs up tidily, no fuss. But here’s the kicker: Five seconds to set up, or it’s on the house.

Travel Bag

This isn’t just a bag—it’s a vault of joy, a trove of thrills. It snugly carries the Mullets, Peppers, and that stellar Fence. Compact yet spacious, it’s designed for the player on-the-go. Every tug of the zipper reveals another layer of adventure.

Navigating Smooth Waters: A Comprehensive Guide on How to Prepare for a Cruise with Kids

Navigating Smooth Waters:

A Comprehensive Guide on How to Prepare for
a Cruise with Kids

Embarking on a cruise with kids is not just a vacation; it’s an immersive experience that demands careful planning and consideration. As the salty breeze awaits your family on the open seas, preparing for such a journey involves more than just booking tickets.

Cruising is becoming more popular, with 2022 United States cruise numbers jumping to almost pre-pandemic levels. However, the average age of a cruise passenger tends to be around 48 – meaning they’re not widely seen as a vacation for the kids. That’s a fallacy, as kids are just as able to enjoy a cruise if you prepare correctly.

In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the intricate details of how to prepare for a cruise with kids, covering essential aspects like booking, packing, destination choices, and selecting the right cruise company.

Setting Sail: Navigating the Booking Process

The first step in preparing for a family cruise is choosing the right cruise line and ship. Not all
cruise companies cater to families with the same level of enthusiasm, so it’s crucial to do your
research. Look for cruise lines that offer dedicated kids’ clubs, family-friendly amenities, and
entertainment options suitable for various age groups. Disney Cruise Line is one such provider
that tailors the experience for families with Disney-themed events and facilities on the ship.

However, you don’t just have to book a children-themed cruise, you can enjoy a luxury cruise on
a ship with children’s facilities. Luxury provider Explora Cruises has a range of interconnected
suites for families wishing to give children their own space, as well as the Nautilus Club, designed to be a hub for kids and teens whilst parents enjoy some of the more adult-centric facilities. Ensuring you research your provider prior to booking is, therefore, essential, as some providers don’t allow children on board at all.
Booking a cruise well in advance is advisable, especially during peak seasons when family-friendly cabins and activities tend to fill up quickly. This not only secures your spot but also allows for better cabin selection. Consider cabins with connecting doors for added convenience and space, ensuring a comfortable journey for both parents and kids.
As you set sail into the realm of cruise adventures, keep an eye out for promotions and discounts. Many cruise lines offer special deals for children, with MSC Cruises offering some deals where kids go free. This can significantly impact the overall cost of your family vacation, making it a budget-friendly option for those with young adventurers in tow.

Packing for Smooth Sailing: Essentials for Every Family
Member

Packing for a family cruise requires strategic planning to ensure you have everything you need for a smooth and enjoyable journey. Begin by checking the cruise line’s guidelines on dress
codes and any specific items they recommend. While packing, keep in mind that cruise cabins,
though cleverly designed, may be limited in space. Opt for collapsible luggage and consider investing in over-the-door organizers to maximize storage.

Don’t forget to pack essentials for each family member, including any necessary medications, favorite comfort items for the little ones, and a first-aid kit. Sunscreen, hats, and swimwear are crucial for days spent by the pool or exploring sunny ports of call. Most cruise lines provide towels, so save space in your luggage and use theirs when lounging on the deck or hitting the beach at your destination.

Charting the Course: Choosing the Perfect Destination

Selecting the right destination is a pivotal decision in planning a family cruise. Consider the interests and preferences of each family member to ensure a well-rounded and enjoyable
experience for everyone. Popular family-friendly cruise destinations include the Caribbean and
the Mediterranean, each offering unique attractions and activities suitable for all ages.

Research the ports of call and shore excursions available at each destination. Opt for excursions
that cater to family dynamics, providing a mix of adventure and relaxation. Whether it’s
exploring ancient ruins, snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs, or simply strolling through picturesque
villages, aligning your activities with your family’s interests enhances the overall cruise
experience.

Choosing the Right Captain: Selecting a Cruise Company that Fits Your Family

Not all cruise companies are created equal, and finding the right fit for your family requires
careful consideration. Look for cruise lines that prioritize family experiences, offering a variety
of age-appropriate activities and facilities. Research online reviews and testimonials from other
families who have sailed with the same cruise line to gain insights into the quality of services
and the overall experience.
Consider the size of the ship, as larger vessels often provide more extensive entertainment
options and facilities for kids. On the other hand, smaller ships may offer a more intimate and
personalized experience. Assess the dining options as well, ensuring there are choices suitable
for picky eaters and accommodating any dietary restrictions within your family.
In conclusion, preparing for a cruise with kids involves meticulous planning and thoughtful
decision-making at every turn. From selecting the right cruise company and booking well in
advance to packing strategically and choosing the perfect destination, each step contributes to the success of your family’s seafaring adventure. As you set sail into the sunset, remember that the memories created during a family cruise will linger long after the anchor has been lifted, making it a journey worth every thoughtful consideration.

Tips on Ice Fishing

Snow pants were never a part of my wardrobe until I met my husband. Sure, I’ve owned them, but it was when I was a kid and I was much more excited that the mittens I was wearing changed colors depending on the weather.  (Remember Freezy Freakies in the 80’s??) My only knowledge of ice fishing was in Chilly Willy cartoons on Saturday mornings.  Now that I have a home on a lake and a husband and kids that can’t get enough outdoor time in winter, I’ve learned to enjoy many fun outdoor activities.  Ice fishing is one of them.  Here are some tips on ice fishing that I’ve learned:

What gear do you need for ice fishing?

It’s all about the gear!  Not all of these are necessary, but some of them certainly make life a lot easier…and more comfortable.
