Stop #1: Saint Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery

The town of Kennebunkport, Maine, is a peaceful coastal town and Saint Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery is a wonderful way to begin your day.  The grounds are open to the public from sunrise to sunset and the Friars welcome visitors. The grounds are tranquil and is a beautiful place to start your day in a calm way.  Children are welcome, however you will want to discuss with them that using quiet voices is expected here so you do not disturb other visitors.  The grounds have two lovely outdoor chapels.  We are not especially religious but I do love visiting churches.  I did not realize how little knowledge of religion my youngest daughter had until I saw her bow at the altar and whisper, “May the force be with you.”  Oh boy!!!

After you visit the chapels, take a riverside walk on their walking path.  The path winds through wooded areas and opens up to views of the coast.  There are benches throughout the paths and make sure you look for the wooden swing.

Stop #2: Explore the town

If you love to shop, then you’ll love Dock Square.  It has quaint boutiques,  souvenir stores, candy shops, coffee shops, and restaurants. If you need something, you can find it here.  The streets are adorable and it is a great activity when you want to get out of the sun.

Make sure you check out my favorite store, The Copper Candle.  They have some unique Maine souvenirs and some amazing candles.

No trip to Kennebunkport would be complete for my daughters without a trip to The Candy Man.  Their favorite is the salt water taffy.

Before you leave town you may want to stop for lunch. Alisson’s is great for it’s lobster rolls and you can’t go wrong at Salt & Honey.

Stop #3: Take a Drive on Ocean Avenue

There is no better way to see the beauty of this part of the coast than a drive on Ocean Avenue.  Driving this route allows you to pull over and enjoy the dramatic views. The mansions will give you a peek at how the other-half lives and you can pick out which one you’d buy if you had a few extra million dollars lying around.

The home of George Bush, at Walker’s Point, is a must-see when in the area.  Don’t get too close or you will get a nice visit from his Secret Service crew and they do not mess around with the safety of the Bush family.

There are many places that you can pull over and get some beautiful coastal shots of the rocky shore.  You can also take some time to play in the tide pools or look for shells and rocks.

Stop #4: Saint Anne’s Church

St. Ann's Church kennebunkport, maine

This beautiful church was built in 1887, and has been in continuous use as a summer chapel since that date.  It is one of the most charming churches I’ve been to in the United States.  It is located right on the coast and the views are breathtaking.

The architecture of the church matches the beauty of its surroundings.  It looks as rugged as the coastline with its stone walls.  Just look at how lovely this church is.

The church has twenty-five stained glass windows in the church proper and six in the sacristy.  They are stunning and many date back to the turn-of-the-century.

The outdoor chapel is a wonderful place to sit and appreciate nature or say a quick prayer.  The view will leave you speechless.  It is also a wonderful place to meditate.

The grounds are an amazing place to relax as you enjoy the breathtaking views.  The seawalls and the colorful gardens offer spots to stop and enjoy their beauty.

George Bush senior parachuted into the church yard when he went skydiving for his 90th birthday.

Stop #5: Ice Cream Time! Rococo!

This place serves the most unique flavors of ice cream.  Before you order make sure you taste a few of the different flavors and make sure you try some you would never imagine liking.  You’ll be surprised. I ended up having the red raspberry sorbet but the sweet avocado cayenne was so good too.  My girls both had the Maine whoopee pie flavor.  Just look at these flavors…

Stop #6: Beach Time

If you’re staying in Kennebunkport this may be a good time to go back to your hotel to go for a swim and relax.  If you are not staying in town, you may want to do your relaxing at Kennebunk Beach.

Stop #7:  Dinner at The Ramp in Cape Porpoise

The Ramp is one of our favorite restaurants in the area.  It is located in Cape Porpoise, but it is only about a 15-minute drive from Kennebunkport.  The Ramp is so laid back that you will feel at home as soon as you walk in.  Your kids will be entertained looking at all the signs hanging in every inch of the place and you will love their delicious cocktails.  Make sure you go early to sit on their Adirondack chairs and look out at the beautiful view.

After dinner, walk across the street and spend some time climbing on the rocks and looking at the lighthouse and lobster boats.  Nothing screams ‘New England’ more than this view.
