Picking the Right Island Destination for your Family

So you’ve decided to take an island vacation with your family. Now what? There are still lots of places you could go and now you’ll need to decide which island is best for you. This is where it takes some investigation. I am a visual person so I like to see the beauty of the different islands. I like to visit sites such as Pinterest and Google Images and I ooohhh and aaahhh over all of the gorgeous beaches and landscapes. So which one will be your vacation?   Here is how I go about picking the right island destination for your family.

Not all islands are alike so here are where more questions come into play when picking the right island destination for your family. I ask myself:

Where is the location of the island?

This is important because if it is very far away we may spend an entire day just getting there. Is this how I want to spend the first and last days of my vacation? Also location determines the weather. If I’m looking for an island vacation for February break, I might not want to choose Bermuda.

What do airfare prices look like to get there?

There are some islands that cost so much more to fly to than others. For example, one year I was looking into St. Croix because I wanted to use my Marriott points. The cost to simply get to the island was my entire budget! If you have airline points, does your airline fly to that island?

Do they offer direct flights from your favorite airports?

This may not be very important to some people but there are people (cough cough…my husband) that really like to fly direct when we have the kids. Can you fly directly onto the island or do you have to change onto a puddle jumper and make several stops? Also, does your favorite airline fly there? After flying JetBlue the first time, I wanted to kiss the pilot. Those built-in televisions took away all my ‘occupy the kids’ obligations and I actually got to…drumroll…read a book!!!

Are there things to do as a family there?

I like to look onto the island’s tourism websites where you can usually browse activities and restaurants. And I always go to the site that is my best friend (Truly…BFF) TripAdvisor. I can’t image life without this site. You can easily find the top activities, restaurants, and hotels. But the best part about TripAdvisor is you can ask questions to people that have actually been there. People that write reviews on this site can say whether you can ask them questions. This is a perfect resource for planning. But remember that their opinion may not be the same as yours.

  1. This is why I NEVER go anywhere anymore. Not only am I horrible at picking destinations I’m awful at hotels and places to stay. Especially for 8 people! Great tips!

8 People? Wow! That would be a challenge. VRBO would be the best bet. House rentals are the way to go with a crowd. I bet your vacations are so much fun with a big group!

These are awesome tips for planning a family trip. There really is a lot to consider when you’re travelling with kids.

  3. I wish it was as easy as thinking of a place and booking it. Like you said, there are a lot of other determining factors to see whether it’s the right choice.

I know. I have friends that say, “Where should we go on vacation?” There’s so much to consider and it is different for every family.

I can imagine it is a whole new set of planning when you have teenagers! They have many more opinions! lol

Isn’t it crazy how much planning goes into it? I remember once we were on a vacation and my husband said, “Isn’t it great how things always work out for us when we’re on vacation?” WHAT??? If only he knew how many hours went into that planning…lol!

I’d rather get up early to fly in the morning and then have some time in the afternoon to enjoy ourselves. I also like flying out in the afternoon so you can get that last walk around the city or last dip in the ocean.

Flights sometimes are a make it or break it decision for me. The cost difference between some islands is ridiculous.
