Castle in the Clouds

cast1

New Hampshire has many special places to view the colorful change of foliage.  At Castle in the Clouds, in Moultonborough, you will be transported back to the early 1900’s to the home of Thomas Plant.  However, do not rush straight up to the castle, take your time and make a few stops along the way.

What is the first stop? Well…

STOP 1: FALLS OF SONGS: First stop is to the beautiful 50 foot waterfall that can be reached by a well-groomed trail.

STOP 2: PULL OVER FOR THE VIEW: The view of Lake Winnipesauke is breathtaking but it is even more amazing in the fall when the colors explode.

STOP 3: CARRIAGE HOUSE RESTAURANT:  If you time it right, this is the perfect time to stop for lunch or some appetizers before you explore the castle. In season, it is only open from 11:30-3:30 so make sure you plan it well.   I have to say that the restaurant is hit or miss. One time we went and had a lovely lunch but the next time we went we had an hour long wait after we placed our order.  It was quite frustrating.  However, if you have to wait then this is the perfect view to watch while you do it…

STOP 4: TROLLEY RIDE UP: The final stretch to the top takes place in an adorable trolley.  The girls loved this part and the driver was so friendly and welcoming.  The trolley goes up every 15 minutes so there is not a long wait.

STOP 5: CASTLE:  Explore the castle and be transported to another time period.  They offer a scavenger hunt for kids and it’s a great way to keep their attention as you move throughout the castle.  When you first arrive, you get a 10-15 minute orientation that will give you some background to Thomas Plant’s life.  Here are some of our favorite spots:

WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO DO?

HIKING: Take a hike on the 28 miles of hiking trails at the castle.

HORSEBACK RIDING: Riding in the Clouds offers guided trails and horse-drawn carriage rides, and pony rides.

ICE CREAM: The best ice cream is for sale at Cones on the Clouds, on your way out of the castle.  Grab a cone, and eat it by the Shannon Pond.  Bring some change to feed the fish in the pond.
