A Perfect Day on Amelia Island

Beautiful Amelia Island is located just off the coast of Florida, about 30 miles from Jacksonville.  This barrier island has 13 miles of sandy beaches and true southern charm.  There are plenty of family activities that will keep everyone happy.  Here is one way to spend a perfect day on this unique island.

If you only have one full day on Amelia Island, I suggest making the most of it with an unforgettable sunrise.  Ok, so it wasn’t exactly my idea, but that’s what I get for not putting a clock in my kids’ bedroom.  In the end, it was worth it, especially since we didn’t have to get out of bed to enjoy it.

STOP #1: FORT CLINCH STATE PARK

Your first adventure should be at this well-preserved Civil War era fort, located right on the water.  Although never fully completed, the fort still served as a military post during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War II.  Being in the fort makes you feel like you’ve been transported back in time, allowing you to experience what everyday life would be like for soldiers stationed there.

The drive into the state park will encircle you with the charm of Amelia Island.  Just look at this canopy of trees…

While in the state park you can enjoy six miles of bike trails. There is also a lovely beach for swimming, sunbathing, and beach combing.  A pier offers the perfect place to do some fishing, and there are two campgrounds.   We were planning to do a small hike but something about this sign made us rethink this.  Maybe some other time when we are feeling brave.

STOP #2:  GRAB A PICNIC LUNCH AND HEAD TO FERNANDINA BEACH

We were lucky enough to be staying at a town house just steps from this beautiful beach. Since we visited in fall, we practically had the beach all to ourselves.  We relaxed,

collected shells and shark teeth,

and played in the tide pools.

The next time we go we would love to go horseback riding on the beach.  The horses loved splashing in the water.

STOP #3: CHECK OUT DOWNTOWN

Before dinner, allow time to walk around this quaint downtown area.  If you missed the sunrise, head towards the water and have a drink while watching the sunset.  The downtown area is filled with quaint shops, boutiques, and historic homes.

You could also do a horse-drawn carriage ride around town to learn about the history of Fernandina Beach.

STOP #4 DINNER IN TOWN

We had a great meal at the Salty Pelican.  It has a great location, delicious food, and a fun atmosphere! Our server was so friendly and helpful with suggestions.  He even gave us recommendations based on what his own kids like to eat there.  If you like seafood, you absolutely MUST try their tuna nachos!

Amelia Island is a wonderful destination for families and we will definitely be returning.

  1. Looks like you had an amazing time! My Mom’s cousin actually lives in Fernandina Beach, and loves it. From the pictures I’ve seen, and the ones you’ve posted, it looks like a fabulous place, and a must visit!
