Winters in New Hampshire can be brutally cold and although my girls love to play outside, there are days when Mother Nature keeps them in. This week showed us just how cold it could get, so we decided it would be the perfect time to review Groovy Lab in a Box, a monthly subscription box that focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).
What do I love about this box?
My girls love science activities and really like when their school does STEM activities, but unfortunately, as a former teacher, I know there’s no time in the schedule to do much of it. I love that the purpose of these boxes is to provide children with the opportunity to focus their imagination, determination, and innate inquisitive nature with a monthly STEM project. The box was a great way for our family to fit in some bonding time while doing fun, hands-on projects. The box allows families to investigate, brainstorm, plan, build, test, and redesign their own creations.
What comes in each box?
Unlike some subscription boxes that require you to buy additional material, Groovy Lab in a Box contains everything you need to complete the projects. It features all the supplies needed to complete activities, experiments, and design challenges outlined in the lab notebook. The only extra tool we used was a pair of scissors.
My girls felt like such scientists when they took out all the supplies.
How can you be sure everyone has a say in the projects?
Groovy Lab in a Box tries to encourage collaboration and strengthen abilities to work together like real engineers by assigning roles. We took turns being:
Speaker: Makes sure everyone offers ideas, resolves disagreements, and makes sure everyone contributes.
Material Manager: Gets materials collected and tests the final design.
Timekeeper: Keeps track of time and keeps everyone on task.
Recorder: Keeps track of data and records results. Takes pictures and video.
What kind of projects did we do?
Investigate: Stuck on You
We brainstormed ideas on why our hair acted differently when we rubbed the balloon on our heads.
Groovy Magic Show
We made pepper do a little dance show for us!
Investigate: Paper Circuits
We learned all about open and closed circuits.
Investigate: Buzz Me In!
We created our own circuit board and made our own doorbell!
My daughter LOVED this activity and even taped the doorbell to her bedroom door. She loves pretending she’s a spy so she used this to keep away intruders. Lol!
Engineer Challenge
The challenge is where you take all the lessons you’ve learned and apply it to one final task. Since we’d already done all these activities, we decided we’ll do this activity over February school break. Just look at how fun this will be…
What is the cost of the subscription box?
Billed monthly: $29.95 per month
Billed every 3 months: $28.95 per month
Billed every 6 months: $27.95 per month
Paid upfront: $24.95 per month
