When many people imagine Iceland they immediately think of the Blue Lagoon. Pinterest is flooded with pictures of this amazing man-made geothermal pool. It is a great way to start or end your vacation since it is so close to the airport and the whole family will have fun there.
Here are 10 tips on doing the Blue Lagoon with kids:
SHOWERING
My girls were really concerned they were going to have to shower naked in front of strangers. The lagoon rules state that you MUST shower before getting in, but if you are stealth you can shower without actually taking off your bathing suit. Here’s how we did it: We wore our bathing suits under our clothes and after putting our clothes in the locker we waited for a shower that had a curtain on it. (There were only one or two) We crammed in together, showered with our suits on, and then headed out to the lagoon without making eye contact with the staff. Done!
LOCKERS
Lockers are included with your entry so lock up any valuables with your clothes. When you arrive, you are given an electronic wrist band that you use to unlock your locker as well as make any purchases, so you can leave your wallet as well.
HYDRATE
The water temp is about 100 degrees so you’ll want to hydrate during your stay…especially the kids. The lagoon has great fruit slushies as well as smoothies made with Skye (Icelandic yogurt) that kids would like. Water is available for free.
SWIM FLOATIES
If you are 8 or younger you are required to use arm floaties. We told a fib that my youngest was 9 because she’s 8 years old and a great swimmer and she could stand in most parts of the lagoon. She would also be at our side the whole time.
SILICA MASKS
These are so much fun and the girls had a great time doing silica facials on each other. The best part is it’s free! Get the silica from the booth in the lagoon, spread it on your body, wait 5-10 minutes, and wash it off.
CONDITIONER
The silica in the water can dry out your hair so make sure to usea ton of conditioner after you get out. We used a leave-in conditioner and put it in a bun on the top of our head.
SUNGLASSES/SUNSCREEN
The reflection off the water can be harsh so you’ll want to put sunscreen on your face and wear sunglasses.
CAVE
There is a cave in the lagoon that has a recording of facts about the lagoon. It’s a great way to get your barring and understand your horizons. You can choose the language of the recording.
FLIP FLOPS/ROBES
You may want to get out of the water for a while so a robe and flip flops is good to have. I would get crazy patterned flip flops because you wouldn’t believe the number of black flip flops we saw.
PACKAGES
The standard package is just fine, especially if you have kids with you. It gives you entrance to the lagoon and the silica facials are included. Best yet…KIDS ARE FREE! Does it get any better than that?
Additional Tips for Planning Your Day
-A waterproof camera or a protective case for your phone is a must!
-Bring a detangling hair brush for after your swim. The lagoon locker rooms offer blow dryers.
-You may also want to bring a leave-in conditioner.
-There are several private changing rooms in the locker room.
-Bring your own towels so you don’t have to rent any.
-Bring lotion and moisturizer for after leaving the lagoon. Your skin will feel tight and dry.
-Swim-up bar has cocktails, beer, water, juice, and smoothies.
-There are saunas and steam rooms to enjoy but they don’t advise children to use them because they get so hot.
-Admission for adults: Standard $55, Comfort $75, Premium $95, Luxury $535. See website for package details.
-The Blue Lagoon is a 20-minute drive from the airport and a 45-minute drive from Reykjavik. It is a great place to go on a long layover.
