Hotel Selfoss

Hotel Selfoss

Where do you fly in?

The best place to fly in to is Keflavik International Airport

First Impression

We approached this modern building and it was not what I expected from what I’d read about Iceland.  The grey color and vast windows made this elegant building stand out in the countryside.  The modern elegance continued within the building as we went into the reception area.  Check-in was quick, with a warm welcome and information about the complimentary breakfast and about dining times.

Lobby of Hotel Selfoss

The hotel is in a great location, close to the southern coast.  It is a good driving distance to the Blue Lagoon, the Golden Circle, and Vik.  The hotel is only a 40-minute drive from Reykjavik and the drive from there is unforgettable as you pass endless fields of lava rock and moss.

We were grateful to be given adjoining rooms so we would have our own space to spread out.  The girls loved the idea of their own room and I felt safe knowing we would leave the door that separated ours room open.

As soon as we opened the door to our room we immediately started smiling because this is the view that greeted us!

Our Suite

We stayed in a Superior Family Suite that is two adjoining rooms.  Our room had a double bed that was so comfortable and pillows that made us want to go right to sleep.  Actually, my husband fell asleep while checking emails about 10 minutes after lying on the bed.

There was also a cozy sitting area with a television.  The couch gave us another good area to enjoy the beautiful view.

The hotel has 139 stylish rooms, all with good amenities.  Each room has satellite television as well as Wi-Fi connection.  There is a safe, which is always a plus when you are traveling outside of the country, since some people like to lock up their passports when they are out.  The room also offers comforts of home such as a tea and coffee maker.  The mini bar was also a nice touch.

Depending on the type of room you have, your bathroom will come with either a shower or a shower/bath.  If you have small children, you may want to request one with a bathtub.

Our bathroom had an enormous jacuzzi tub!

The hotel restaurant is elegant and has the most amazing view.  Since this is our first time in Iceland, we cannot get enough of the view, and since the sun does not set until midnight, we were able to enjoy the view even though we chose to have a late dinner.  The tables and chairs are decorated with soft leather furnishings. I can’t say enough praise about our waitress and the rest of the dining staff.  They were all courteous and welcoming to my family and they were all genuinely kind. They made our dining experience unforgettable.

Restaurant

The food is prepared using only the finest local produce and you could taste the freshness of the ingredients. The restaurant offers a nightly special on certain dishes for hotel guests.  We all opted to have the dinner buffet since it would give us the opportunity to try several Icelandic dishes.  The buffet had an appetizer section, salads, main dishes, and a dessert and cheese section.  Of course, my daughters’ favorite spot was the ice cream section!

Lunch is served from 11:30- 6:00.

Dinner is served from 6:00 -10:00.

There is also a lounge/bar area that is a nice place to stop for a drink before or after your meal.

The hotel offers a lovely complimentary breakfast buffet. Again, the food was fresh and was constantly being refilled.   If you have an earlier flight, let the reception desk know and they will arrange something.

It is served daily from 6:30-10:00 (7:00-10:00 in winter) 7:00-11:00 on Sundays.

Although I wish I had time to use the spa, I unfortunately did not get a chance to have a service done.  There was just too much to do in Iceland for me to stop for a massage.  The spa is designed in the atmosphere of Icelandic nature and the theme of fire and ice.  They offer amenities such as a hot pool, rainwater showers, sauna, steam room, and a relaxation room.  They offer a large range of services.  Click here to view their menu.

Staff/wait staff

The staff were so kind and helpful throughout our stay.  Our waitress was one of the best we had while in Iceland.  She was attentive, prompt, and had a wonderful personality.
