On our last night in Iceland we decided to stay somewhere that was close to the Blue Lagoon, our final activity before catching our flight. The Northern Lights Inn is the perfect location to stay since it is located directly next door to the lagoon and is only a 5-minute walk. We chose the inn based on location, but we were pleasantly surprised by how nice it was. Located 20 minutes from Keflavik Airport and 45 minutes from Reykjavik, it is a wonderful starting point or final destination to get your barring before setting out to explore Iceland.
The dramatic landscape surrounding the inn is amazing!
Our Family Room
Our family room had a double bed and two twin beds with soft pillows and Icelandic down comforters. The girls loved the room and said it reminded them of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. There was free Wi-Fi as well as a satellite tv. The room also had comfortable air conditioning and it was nice to be able to control our room temperature since that is not the case in many hotels in Iceland.
The bathroom was simple, but the water pressure of the geo-thermal shower was very strong.
Restaurant
We dined at Max’x Restaurant as our last Icelandic meal and it was a wonderful choice. I had a well-prepared lamb dish with fresh vegetables and delicious home-baked bread. We also each had dessert to celebrate our last night. Arriving late at night? If you let the hotel know ahead of time, they will have a sandwich waiting for you upon arrival. The restaurant had an amazing panoramic view of the surrounding geothermal lava fields and rift tectonic mountains.
In the morning, the inn has a complimentary buffet with pastries, boiled eggs, smoked salmon, fresh cheese, home-baked bread, cereals, and more. If you have an early flight, the inn can make you an early bird breakfast.
Feel like a cocktail? The inn has a fully stocked honesty bar where guests can make their own drinks and just leave the money there. I love this idea!
The room reminded me of someone’s study, with leather couches, club chairs, and dark wood furniture.
There were several cozy sitting areas at the inn. This room had a lovely fireplace and chairs you sink in to and I imagine it would be very comfortable to sit here and read a book in winter.
Do your kids need something to keep them occupied? Have them help complete a puzzle.
When we arrived, we saw they had complimentary coffee, tea, and hot chocolate available throughout the day. There is also a make-your-own waffle station every afternoon., from 2:30-4:30.
Outside, there is a stone patio with views of the geothermal lava fields. You feel like you are looking out at another planet. When my daughter and I were having tea out there we appreciated that the stone walls were high so we were not exposed to the wind.
Staff
The staff was helpful throughout our stay by asking if they could help with directions, or providing shuttles. They held our bags after we checked out and loaned us towels to use at the Blue Lagoon.
