15 Cookbooks that Inspire Travel

One of the best things about travel is the FOOD! Eating local cuisine can tell you a lot about the culture.  Being Portuguese, I know that lots of love goes into our food and that the best memories are made around a dining room table.  Since we’re not using our passports right now, a great way to “travel” is to discover new places through their food.  I love to gather my family in the kitchen, put on some music, and start giving everyone a task of chopping, measuring, stirring, and tasting.  Here are a few of my favorite cookbooks.

Here are 15 cookbooks that will inspire you to travel the world:

15 Ways to Keep the Travel Spirit Alive While at Home

Traveling is one of the best ways to experience new cultures, meet new people, and broaden your horizons. I love the upbeat, relaxed mood my whole family gets in when we’re exploring a new place. No one has a care in the world. However, it’s so easy to fall back in a rut when you get home and it is not always possible to travel as often as we would like. Here are 15 ways to keep the travel spirit alive while at home.

Try new recipes from around the world

One of the best ways to experience a new culture is through its cuisine. Try cooking a new dish from a different country and explore its unique flavors. Here are some of my favorite cookbooks that remind me of my travels:

15 Food You Need to Try in Portugal

seafood from Portugal

One of the best memories of my childhood were holidays where our dining room was filled with friends and family.  We would sit for hours and tell stories and laugh while we ate course after course. Meals were built with fresh ingredients and cooked with love. When traveling to Portugal, you have to try its delicious cuisine. From fresh seafood to savory meats, there is no shortage of amazing food to try. Here are 15 foods you need to try in Portugal:

APPETIZERS

Queijo da Serra

Queijo da Serra is a soft and creamy cheese that is made from sheep’s milk. It is great for a petisco (a Portuguese version of tapas).

Sausages

My four favorite are Chouriço: You can have it cold or hot, but an awesome way to eat it is a flame-grilled chouriço assado, cooked in a clay dish and they light the sausage.

Linguiça: It is a lot like Chouriço, but has more paprika and garlic.

When We Believed in Mermaids (***Top Pick)

By: Barbara O’Neal

When We Believed in Mermaids:

Her sister has been dead for fifteen years when she sees her on the TV news…

Josie Bianci was killed years ago on a train during a terrorist attack. Gone forever. It’s what her sister, Kit, an ER doctor in Santa Cruz, has always believed. Yet all it takes is a few heart-wrenching seconds to upend Kit’s world. Live coverage of a club fire in Auckland has captured the image of a woman stumbling through the smoke and debris. Her resemblance to Josie is unbelievable. And unmistakable. With it comes a flood of emotions—grief, loss, and anger—that Kit finally has a chance to put to rest: by finding the sister who’s been living a lie.

After arriving in New Zealand, Kit begins her journey with the memories of the past: of days spent on the beach with Josie. Of a lost teenage boy who’d become part of their family. And of a trauma that has haunted Kit and Josie their entire lives.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (***Another Top Pick)

By: Taylor Jenkins Reid

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Review of One Girl Inspired Subscription Box

With these uncertain times, tweens/teenagers can have lots of negative feelings.  They may be missing their friends, becoming overwhelmed with remote learning, or nervous about what they are seeing on the news.  Now it is more important than ever to make them feel powerful and stay positive.  One Girl Inspired subscription box is the perfect way to bring positivity and empowerment into your home.

What do I love about this box?

As a mom of an 11 & 13-year-old, I am always trying to make them feel powerful, encourage them to be themselves, help others that are in need, and be kind to everyone. Girls these days have so much weighing on them from social media, peer pressure, and the pressure of getting good grades.  This box is a wonderful monthly gift that will help them build self-confidence and self-love.

What comes in each box?

Each month they’ll receive 4-6 fun and inspiring tools that coincide with a different theme. Items may range from journals, personal development books, tech gadgets, fun school supplies, jewelry, beauty items, and much more.

What did they get in this box?

The theme of their box was USE YOUR VOICE!

They stress, “Your voice is your own, and it is within your power to control that. There is power in using your own unique voice to bring about the positive change you wish to see in the world. Always speak your own truth.”

Epicurean Hotel

CHECK-IN/FIRST IMPRESSION

As we pulled up and were unloading our bags for our car to be valet parked, we were greeted outside by a staff member that checked us in using an IPad.  I loved this because it saved us so much time.  The staff at the front desk gave wonderful customer service and I was shocked that every time we walked by they addressed me by name.  I was only there for one night but they actually learned my name?  Very impressive.

LOCATION

The hotel is located in the trendy Hyde Park district of South Tampa, known to locals as So-Ho.  It is within walking distance from beautiful Bayshore Blvd and its waterfront and there are several restaurants within walking distance from the hotel.  It is developing into one of South Tampa’s hottest neighborhoods.  The area has a sophisticated yet welcoming vibe that is carried on into the hotel.

Epicurean Hotel mytravelingkids.com

LOBBY

The lobby is so fun because it focuses on one thing in particular…WINE!  Seriously…when you walk in you’ll want to open up a bottle and sit down in the lobby to enjoy it.  The back wall is entirely made of wine crates.  They told me it took over a year to collect enough crates.  The actual front desks are made up of wine refrigerators.

Epicurean Hotel mytravelingkids.com

All around the hotel there are hints of food/wine elements.  For example, there are murals of blocks of cheese, cookbooks displayed on tables, and kitchen utensils used as décor.

OUR ROOM

The wine/food elements carry into the guestrooms.  Each of the hotel’s 137 rooms contain person touches that make it a memorable stay.  The pillows on the bed had utensils stenciled on them and the lighting was made up of glass jars.  The room does not lack in creativity…they even used a butcher block as a table.  A great touch was the alarm clock that had a built-in phone charger, which saved me because I left my charger at the previous hotel and I needed it for GPS on the way to the airport in the morning.

Each room has an artisan pantry filled with liquors, wine, beer, and sparkling waters.  But do not dare call this a mini bar.  This pantry contains pairings such as prosciutto, olives, and chévre (goat cheese).   I quickly put away the $53 half bottle of wine they display on the counter, for safe measures.  Needless to say, I warned my girls not to go anywhere near this pantry!

Epicurean Hotel mytravelingkids.com

You know I love a good bathroom and the Epicurean Hotel does not disappoint.  The main focal point of the room is the gorgeous reclaimed wood bathroom doors.  I immediately texted a picture to my husband telling him we absolutely needed one of these.  The shower area was large and they offer a nice assortment of bath products.

POOL

The pool area is large and there is ample seating and end tables for drinks.  I was a little nervous at first because my girls (ages 7 & 9) were the only kids in the pool.  But they were really well behaved (no screaming and no splashing since people had drinks in the pool) and no one seemed to mind they were there.

SEATING AREAS

Throughout the hotel there are a variety of seating areas.  The lobby has a warm, inviting room with deep couches and TV’s playing cooking shows.  Outside there are lots of areas with white couches and you can smell the inviting aromas of fresh basil and rosemary in potted plants.

EPICUREAN THEATRE

Located off the lobby is a theatre that offers a variety of cooking demonstrations and culinary presentations.  It seats up to 40 people in stadium seats with two 70-inch televisions to view the instruction closely.  Wish you were at one of these presentations?  Simply turn on the television in your room to watch pre-taped sessions.

FITNESS ROOM

We tried out the fitness room one afternoon when it was empty.  It consists of free weights as well as machines.  They offer a nice fresh lemon water and the room was very clean.

BIKING

The Epicurean Hotel offers bike rentals if you wish to explore the area.  I wish we had the time to have done that.

Epicurean Hotel mytravelingkids.com

TECHNOLOGY

There is a downloadable app you can use for housekeeping needs, dinner and spa reservations, and in-room dining requests.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Although the hotel was welcoming to children, it seemed like a hotel I would see myself going for a night alone with my husband or a girl’s weekend.  There is a rooftop bar as well as one in the lobby, which would have been fun to do without kids.  However, my girls and I had a blast and were treated so well that I would definitely return when in Tampa.
