Discovering Marsaxlokk: A Slice of Malta’s Coastal Charm
If you’re planning a trip to Malta, make sure Marsaxlokk is on your list of must-see spots. This charming fishing village on the island’s southeastern coast has so much to offer, from its iconic colorful boats to mouthwatering seafood. Here’s a laid-back guide to Discovering Marsaxlokk: A Slice of Malta’s Coastal Charm.
Getting to Marsaxlokk
Marsaxlokk is easily accessible from Valletta, the capital of Malta. You can hop on a bus, which will take you there in about 40 minutes, or if you’re feeling adventurous, renting a car is a great option too. Parking can be a bit tricky, especially on Sundays, so get there early to snag a good spot.
What to Expect
The first thing you’ll notice is the picturesque harbor, filled with traditional fishing boats called luzzus. These boats are painted in bright colors, with the eye of Osiris painted on their bows to protect fishermen at sea. It’s one of those scenes that feels straight out of a postcard.
Indulge in Fresh Seafood
Marsaxlokk is renowned for its seafood. Grab a table at one of the waterfront restaurants, and you’re guaranteed some of the freshest fish you’ll ever taste. Try the lampuki pie (dorado fish pie) or grilled octopus – you won’t be disappointed. We shared an amazing grilled fish that they filleted in front of us.
We also had some delicious Limoncello Spritz!
Stroll Along the Waterfront
After a delicious meal, take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront. The vibe here is so relaxed, and you can take in the sights of the boats bobbing in the harbor, fishermen fixing their nets, and locals going about their day.
Visit St. Peter’s Pool
A short drive or a scenic boat ride from Marsaxlokk will take you to St. Peter’s Pool, a natural swimming spot that’s popular with locals and tourists alike. The water here is crystal clear, perfect for a refreshing swim or a bit of snorkeling. Don’t forget to bring some water shoes, as the rocks can be a bit slippery!
Travel Tips for Marsaxlokk
Timing is Everything: If you want to experience the market, aim to arrive early, as it can get quite crowded by mid-morning. Plus, the early bird catches the best fish – quite literally!
Bring Cash: While some places accept cards, many of the market stalls and smaller eateries prefer cash, so it’s a good idea to have some euros on hand.
Stay Hydrated: Malta’s sun can be pretty intense, especially during the summer months. Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated as you explore the village and the surrounding areas.
Respect Local Customs: Marsaxlokk is still very much a traditional fishing village. While the locals are friendly and welcoming, remember to be respectful, especially when taking photos. Always ask permission if you’re snapping pictures of people going about their daily lives.
