Pink Cave House - My Traveling Kids

When I dreamed of traveling to Santorini, Greece, I knew I wanted to wake up in Oia, look out my window, and see the traditional postcard view of white cave houses blanketing the hillside. This is exactly what we got when we stayed at the Pink House. We decided to live in a traditional cave house to feel immersed into the community during our week-long stay.

We arrived at midnight, but the walk through town to our home for the week woke us right up. After seeing our view, we decided to skip the bars and instead grab a beer and sit on our veranda to enjoy our first glimpse of Santorini. I had been dreaming of that moment for years.

The next morning, I opened the door to our room and my jaw dropped when I saw what was in front of me.

This house is perfect for a large family, or two couples, since it offers a bedroom with a separate entrance on a different level. My mother-in-law and two daughters stayed in the main house and my husband and I took the upstairs private room. The main house has two large bedrooms. One bedroom had a queen size bed and no windows so when you closed your bedroom door it was so dark, which was wonderful for my youngest daughter after staying up so late doing dinners at night.

My older daughter was in love with hers because it had a beautiful lace canopy above the bed.

Our bedroom had quintessential Santorini charm that gave us the best cave dwelling experience I could have asked for. The domed stone walls kept us cool all night and there was always a breeze through our window.

The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed to cook at home. When we arrived at midnight we were pleasantly surprised the owner, Maria, had left us water, wine, juice, and breakfast provisions. We immediately felt right at home. She does a wonderful job providing modern amenities while keeping the traditional charm of the home.

The living room was large and contained two sofas and tables the girls used to play dolls on. There was a television but with so much to do in Santorini I don’t think it was ever turned on. For us, the couches didn’t get much use because we were too busy enjoying the verandas. And who could blame us?

The house has a large main patio with a hot tub. It was also a great spot for relaxing and having meals.

There were two smaller patios so you have three levels overlooking the caldera.

These private terraces give breathtaking views of the volcano, surrounding islands, the traditional hilltop view of Oia, and the deep blue Aegean Sea. We did everything on these veranda including eat meals, read books, and the girls had endless hours playing games.

Every morning the girls would start off at this spot. Can you think of a better place to welcome the day?

The location of the house could not be more perfect. Its central location (only 100 meters from the center of the village) allows you to step out your door and be surrounded by the beauty of Santorini, yet it is far enough away from bars and restaurants that you get the serenity of the town at night. You are about a two-minute walking distance from restaurants, shops, markets, art galleries, the bus stop, and the taxi terminal. It was the perfect place to call home for the week and made it an experience I will never forget!
