When I think of vacationing in Maine, I picture us with wind-blown hair searching for shells on a beach after an afternoon of playing in the waves. The coast of Maine has many great accommodations and the Higgins Beach Inn is one of my new finds. Located in Scarborough, the inn is just 20 minutes from one of my favorite Maine towns…Portland. I had never visited Scarborough before, and I couldn’t wait to explore this gorgeous coastal town.
This three-storied colonial dates back to 1897, but is filled with modern amenities for travelers. The hotel has done a fabulous job maintaining the inn’s historic charm while giving travelers everything they need for a comfortable stay. It is the quintessential Maine hotel that’s a short walk from the unspoiled sands of Higgins Beach.
We stayed in room 31, in a Swells 2 queen room. Our door reminded me of an old lifeguard tower.
We immediately felt calm when we walked into our room. It made us feel like we were sleeping in a cozy beach cottage. I was in love with the shiplap focal wall.
The crisp white bedding had a clean, relaxed feel and the down comforter was great to snuggle up with after a long day at the beach.
The room has two windows, which allowed tons of light to fill the room. There was also a white distressed dresser and a full-length mirror.
The walls had colorful vintage-looking Maine posters, which I love!
There was also a small hallway area that had a place to hang clothes, and a table that had beach towels, a cooler, fresh water, an iron, and a blow dryer.
The cooler was a wonderful personal touch since it is often something a traveler needs when they are at the beach.
The bathroom was decorated in my favorite décor…black and white vintage, with tile floors and a subway-tiled shower. The tub was deep and there was plenty of room on the vanity for three girls to get ready.
Higgins Beach
The inn is nestled between Prouts Neck and Crescent Beach State Park, so there are many beautiful beaches to choose from. It’s the perfect destination when vacationing along Maine’s stunning coastline. We loved the fact that you only have to walk one block to get to the beach! Higgins Beach is an amazing piece of sand that abuts a rocky cliff area. We had so much fun building sand castles, playing badminton, and throwing the frisbee around.
Since parking is sparse, the beach wasn’t crowded. I love that it’s so close so you can go back in the evening for a walk after dinner.
I love the interesting architecture of historic inns. Throughout the Higgins Beach Inn, classic elegance would stand out. Take a look at these stunning chairs in the lobby.
Check out this cash register!
Each room has an interesting feature above their door that is reminiscent of days past. Some had old pictures
and some had stained glass.
Shades Restaurant
Unfortunately, we were not able to experience dinner at the restaurant since it wasn’t open on the days we were there. Even if I wasn’t staying here, I think it would be a perfect place to come after spending the day at Higgins Beach. Take a peek at their MENU.
However, we were thrilled to be able to experience it for breakfast. We loved starting our day with a sit-down breakfast in the screened-in porch. I enjoyed a decadent eggs benedict with Canadian bacon, fresh hollandaise sauce, and papas bravas. I decided that since I was in Maine, I would have to add…you guessed it…lobster!
My older daughter had buttermilk Belgian waffles with whipped butter, Maine maple syrup, and a mixed berry compote.
My youngest had her favorite…an open-faced bagel with lox, that came with smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, red onion, capers, and dill.
The front porch is the perfect place to sit on their rocking chairs with a good book, have a cocktail, and smell the ocean air.
Or to snuggle up together.
The lobby has complimentary tea and coffee throughout the day and sweet treats in the afternoon…homemade chocolate chip cookies one day and homemade lemon muffins the next. It is these personal touches that make you remember your stay.
