The Boathouse Waterfront Hotel
My husband and I celebrated our 20th…yes 20th wedding anniversary at the lovely Boathouse Waterfront Hotel, in Kennebunkport, Maine. Since we were in the middle of a pandemic, I looked for somewhere that was safe, clean, and small. I didn’t think this was the time to stay in a large resort and I loved the quaint feel of this place. The hotel has 25 modern guest rooms and suites, so it feels very homey. 12 of the rooms are in the main building and 13 are across the footbridge and are done up in stylish beach décor.
The Lobster Suite!
We were upgraded to the Lobster suite and it was absolutely stunning! Let me show you around. When you walk into the suite, you enter into the living room and the first thing your eyes are drawn to is the ceiling! How fabulous are these stripes?!
The bedroom was full of natural light because of the two large sliders on this corner suite.
My favorite part of the suite was the private balcony that overlooked the Kennebunk River.
The room also has a large slider that we opened to get another fabulous view. This time, the view overlooked the famous Kennebunkport Bridge (Mathew J. Lanigan Bridge) and Dock Square.
The bedroom had gorgeous artwork of piers and lobster boats, and had lush carpeting. The linens were amazing and the room was extremely quiet, even with the restaurant under it.
I love that the hotel uses deep coastal colors and contemporary nautical accents to pay homage to Kennebunkport’s rich maritime heritage. Just look at those nightstands made from lobster traps, the lobster embroidered pillows, and the buoy lighting!
The bathroom was beautiful, and had a standup shower with great bath amenities. My only complaint is the bathroom door is glass and doesn’t go all the way to the top and bottom so there is very little privacy when you’re in there.
All rooms include premium WiFi, flat screen tv’s, Keurig coffeemakers, hair dryers, irons, and ironing boards, and newspapers delivered daily.
Before we went out for the afternoon, we stopped to enjoy a glass of chilled prosecco that the hotel left for us. (Thank you!) Then it was off to explore Dock Square.
The Boathouse Restaurant
Our first night, we decided to dine at The Boathouse Restaurant, and it was the perfect setting for a romantic dinner outside. The restaurant offers an Asian twist on seafood and the menu had lots of great options.
We were greeted with glasses of champagne and a lovely note wishing us a happy anniversary.
The view of the Kennebunk River is even more amazing at night.
We started with a delicious charcuterie board.
For our meals we had the Short Rib Ramen
(Soft boiled egg, kimchi, fried garlic, nori, scallion)
And the Seared Shrimp & Scallops
(Lobster fried rice, sesame egg, baby bok choy)
After a relaxing night’s sleep, we woke up craving breakfast. A nice touch was that each morning when we opened our door, there was a paper bag hanging on a hook. In it was fresh fruit, pastries, and juice. It was a nice way to start the day. If you feel like a latte, you can cross the footbridge and grab one from the coffee house in town.
How we spent our day
Before we left the hotel, we decided to check out their rooftop patio.
The views of the Kennebunk River can’t be beat.
We decided to spend our day walking around Kennebunkport. There are so many things you can do in the area. For example, you can…
Walk down to St. Anne’s Church to see the stunning stone church and its outdoor chapel.
Take a stroll to the beach and spend the day on the sand or walking on the jetty.
There are many places alone the way to sit on a bench by the ocean and breathe in the fresh air or walk beside the Kennebunk River.
Downtown Kennebunkport is right outside the hotel’s doors, so you can peek inside all the adorable shops. Dock Square is literally right across a small footbridge. Or, if you walk across the bridge, to Kennebunk, there are lots of places to eat. Feeling like you need a cocktail? Right in town you have a brewery, meadery, and distillery. I strongly recommend the mule at Batson River.
A perfect sunset on our anniversary
As we were getting ready for dinner, we stopped in our tracks when we saw the unbelievable sunset that was happening outside. It looked like the sky was on fire! We sat on our balcony and enjoyed it together. It was the perfect way to end the day!
Who is this hotel best suited for?
The hotel made the perfect setting for a couple’s getaway. It would also be a fun place to spend a girls’ weekend. Although it is fine for kids, the fact that there is no pool or yard would make me look elsewhere if the kids were with us.

Room choice? I would recommend a room in the main hotel.
