Portland Regency Hotel
Portland, Maine
If you’re planning a trip to Portland, Maine, staying at the Portland Regency Hotel is a decision you won’t regret. This boutique hotel is nestled right in the heart of the city’s Old Port District, giving you easy access to charming cobblestone streets, unique shops, and the buzzing waterfront. The location alone makes it an ideal base for exploring everything Portland has to offer, from craft breweries to historic landmarks. My husband and I thought it was the perfect hotel for a getaway in Maine.
First Impression
From the moment you step into the Portland Regency, built in 1895, you’ll be impressed by its timeless elegance and warm hospitality. Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century armory, the hotel blends historic charm with modern comfort. Its classic brick facade and elegant design give off an inviting, old-world charm from the moment you arrive. The welcoming staff and cozy atmosphere set the tone for a relaxing and memorable stay.
When we visited in the first week of January, everything was still decorated for the holidays. Poinsettias were everywhere, creating a festive vibe. We especially loved the lobster trap Christmas tree outside the front entrance.

The hotel has 95 luxurious rooms and suites. Let me show you around our room.

View?
To your right are the quiet back streets of the Old Port
To your left is a beautiful view of the water. That was such a treat because I didn’t realize how close to were to the harbor.
Our bathroom
These rooms also feature a renovated bathroom with a magnifying mirror, a hair dryer, granite counter tops, and a glassed-in shower. The resort provides a comfortable robe, although since there were 2 people staying in the room it would have been nice to have to have enough robes.
Since we’d spent the day at our daughter’s track meet in Gorham, we just wanted to relax, enjoy some cocktails, and have a delicious meal.
Our first stop of the night was Armory Lounge
Located in the lower lobby of the hotel, the Armory Lounge has long been considered one of the more popular hangouts in Portland’s exciting Old Port neighborhood. Make yourself comfortable at their mahogany bar or in a cozy alcove. I had a delicious espresso martini. There were also many appetizers that looked yummy but we had a reservation, so we didn’t get to have any. The cozy Armory Lounge is a relaxed space to for both casual gatherings and romantic evenings.
Let’s head to dinner
Besides the restaurant in the hotel, there are endless dining options around. We had a reservation at David’s, which was less than a 10-minute walk.
We started with deviled eggs and caviar and a coconut mojito.
Dinner was an Open-Faced Lobster Ravioli with lobster, scallops, and shrimp. It was heaven!
Time for our last stop…a nightcap at Iron Side
Iron Side, the hotel’s whiskey bar, which offers an impressive selection of fine whiskeys and craft spirits in an intimate and sophisticated setting—perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. I enjoyed a glass of prosecco and my husband enjoyed a fabulous glass of whiskey. The bartender was very knowledgeable and loved to share info about the different bottles. It was the perfect way to end the night.
Brunch at Eighteen95
After a wonderful night’s sleep, we couldn’t wait to go down and get some breakfast. Eighteen95 offers warm, intimate décor, punctuated by softly lit chandeliers and a lovely brick fireplace. They had a wonderful brunch menu with so many delicious options. They create farm-to-table dishes with a focus on fresh, local ingredients
We were seated in a lovely table right next to the fireplace. It was a comfortable, inviting space.

What can you do in the area?
The hotel is located steps from the Eastern Promenade Trail where you can go for a walk, ride your bike, go rollerblading, or do a run. Stroll along the cobblestone streets as you explore the many boutiques, galleries, and cafes. The Portland Museum of Art is a great stop for everyone. If you like visiting small galleries, go on a self-guided First Friday night art walk. The hotel is in such a central area you won’t need to get back in your car.
