Who would have guessed that prison could be so romantic? The Liberty Hotel is housed in the exact building of the Charles Street Jail, a national historic landmark. Completed in 1851, this jail once house some of Boston’s most historic inmates, and now you can call it home for the night. It has a nice blend of high-style luxury and hometown warmth. Trust me…you won’t be asking anyone to bail you out!

I’ve actually stayed at the Liberty Hotel twice. The first was for a romantic 15th anniversary celebration with my husband, and it was the perfect place to sneak away without the kids. This time we were here with several other couples staying over after watching Billy Joel perform at Fenway. (Oh my goodness…he was amazing!) Although my kids have never been here, I did see several families and I think my girls would love to see the old prison features of the hotel. I can’t wait to bring them here one day!
The hotel is located at the foot of Beacon Hill. Every time we drive by the Liberty Hotel, I get chills at the beautiful outside façade, knowing it once held some pretty shaddy guys. The outside has remained largely unchanged and it looks especially beautiful at night. Time to head inside. You HAVE to see this interior!
The 90-foot high atrium is beautifully preserved and forms the focal piece of the hotel. As you look around, notice the catwalk high above you.
The personal touches made a nice impression on us from the start, including the complimentary glass of prosecco at check-in.
The hotel has 298 beautiful modern rooms…18 in the main building and 280 in the 16-story tower across “the yard.” (No jail cells here!) We stayed in a Grand Deluxe King Guest room with a Beacon Hill view, that had floor-to-ceiling windows and a sweeping city view.
The view of the city and Charles River was gorgeous!
It also had a beautiful view of the historic prison walls and old “yard”.
Just look at how adorable our “do not disturb” sign was!
I love the way the hotel shows hints of the hotel’s past without making it look too themed. Our nightstand looked like an old safe.
And I absolutely love this pillow…counting down the days!
The room had a mini bar as well as a great cocktail selection.
Since I am the person in our family who usually gets up with our two dogs, it was such a treat to be able to sleep in…especially since these beds were extremely comfortable. If it weren’t for my daughter’s soccer game that day I may have slept in all morning!
Our room had a large bathroom with a glass enclosed shower and a separate tub. The hotel provides a comfortable bath robe, bath amenities, and a blow dryer.
One of my favorite thing about The Liberty Hotel is dining at Clink,
which still has original jail cells separating the dining tables. There is no prison food here…just seasonal food that uses local ingredients. You can enjoy fresh North Atlantic seafood as well as amazing dishes using seasonal New England ingredients.
We had dinner here with 10 of our friends and everyone’s food looked delicious! The chef sent out a tasting spoon that had a roasted potato with prosciutto.
For my meal I had strip steak, but I replaced the truffle fries with wild mushrooms. It was cooked perfectly!
After our concert, we enjoyed some cocktails at Alibi, which appropriately was once the “drunk tank” of the jail.
Its dark, brick cell walls and jail bars set the mood
as you look around at the portraits on the wall of famous celebrities’ mugshots with their “alibis” for why they were arrested. It felt like Lindsay Lohan was our cellmate for the night!
My one complaint was Alibi had a certain bouncer/security guy that was very rude and arrogant. He was one of those guys that seemed like he was trying to prove something by being a jerk. It was unfortunate that he ended our night on a sour note and he was a poor representation of the bar/hotel, which is a shame because everyone else we dealt with was very nice.
We didn’t dine at Scampo, the fancier restaurant at the hotel, but my husband and I dined there the first time we were here. Their food is fabulous and it is a wonderful place to have a nice celebration.
