Hawthorne Hotel
(Salem, Massachusetts)
As I was packing for my night away, my daughter came in to tell me she just watched a YouTube video and the Hawthorne Hotel was one of the most haunted hotels in America. I told her, “As long as the ghost isn’t saying ‘Mom. Mom. Mom’ a hundred times a day they were more than welcome to stay with me!” Spoiler alert…I didn’t see any ghosts, but I did experience a relaxing, comfortable stay in this gorgeous historic hotel in Salem, Massachusetts.
When I pulled up to the Hawthorne, I was impressed by how grand it was. The brick building has an impressive presence as it looms over the corner of the block. The navy blue awnings, golden eagle, and colorful mums welcome you in.
Inside, the lobby was elegantly decorated. There were comfortable couches and seating areas with throw pillows that welcomed you to sit and read the paper.
A stunning bouquet of sunflowers and hydrangeas gave a New England feel.
Although the hotel was established in 1925, it doesn’t look dated. They have managed to merge modern amenities while still capturing the history of the hotel. In fact, the Hawthorne is a proud member of the Historic Hotels of America. Just look at this letter box!
The hotel has 93 guest rooms and 6 floors. There are 89 rooms in the main building and 4 rooms in the Fidelia Bridges guest house.
Let me show you around my room.
I stayed in room 520, a
Superior Queen with Exterior View
The first thing you’ll notice when you walk into the room is this little hallway where you can store your coats, umbrellas, and bags. It immediately give a unique feel to the room.
The room has a calm, elegant vibe created by the white, grey, and green hues around the room. I love the wallpaper on the focal wall and the cloth headboard was unexpected.
The room had some lovely personal touches, like the decorative H on the bed pillow.
I also loved the ceiling medallion above the chandelier.
You’ll want to immediately jump into this luxurious queen size bed. The crisp white comforter and five fluffy down pillows will tempt you to take a nap. However, there’s so much to explore in Salem, so it will have to wait.
The room had a sitting area and a small table.
As well as a small table where you could work and the room had great Wi-Fi.
My room was a corner room so it had lots of natural light. It also had two lovely views. The first was of the historic town and the second was the leafy common. Since it was the beginning of November, the leaves were just finished changing so it looked so pretty.
The bathroom was adorable. The black and white tiles floor and the beadboard walls gave it a farmhouse feel. The shower was large and had amazing water pressure.
As much as I loved my room, I couldn’t wait to explore Salem.
The Hawthorne is right in the heart of Salem and you can walk to so many attractions. I had a lovely day.
Some of the places I visited during my stay included:
Jolie Tea House: I had an amazing high tea. They have a wonderful presentation and a huge selection of tea to choose from. (Click here for a full review)
Salem Witch Museum: This was a great way to learn all about the Salem Witch Trials. They use displays to teach about the trials so it brings it to life for you. It’s a wonderful introduction to Salem.
Peabody Essex Museum: (Click here for a full review)
This is a lovely museum that is filled with a large variety of art. You can honestly spend half a day in here.
Salem Witch Trials Memorial: After learning about the injustices that were done, it is a wonderful place to show respect for them.
House of Seven Gables: This historic home, built in 1668, is best known today as the setting of world-renowned American author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel. Take a guided group tour through this seaside home.
Sea Level Oyster Bar: Cocktails, oysters, and a breathtaking view!
When I finally returned to the hotel, I could not have been happier to see that they serve complimentary coffee and iced water in the lobby.
While at the hotel, make sure you visit The Tavern. It has a wood-burning fireplace, oak-paneled walls, winged back chairs and views of the Common. I wasn’t able to experience it because there was a wedding party happening there, but I will definitely go back.
After a day of exploring Salem, I decided that I would love to order some dinner, get in my pj’s, and enjoy my cozy room. I ordered dinner from Nathaniel’s Restaurant and went down and picked it up. Take a peek at their menu.
I had Sweet Onion Bleu Burger (8oz. prime beef burger, crumbled gorgonzola, arugula, apple bacon jam) and Parmesan truffle fries. It was so delicious!
