Wentworth by the Sea Hotel: A Luxurious Seacoast Escape in New Hampshire
If you’re looking for the perfect coastal escape, Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle, New Hampshire, is a must-visit. This stunning, historic hotel offers breathtaking ocean views, luxury accommodations, and easy access to the beautiful Portsmouth area. Whether you’re into spa treatments, fine dining, or just relaxing by the water, Wentworth by the Sea is where charm meets relaxation. Let’s dive into what makes this gem one of the top New England getaways!
A few months ago, my sweet family gave me a spa getaway to the Wentworth by the Sea, in Newcastle, NH, and I finally decided to pack my bags and go. There’s no place that relaxes me more than being on the seacoast, and I was excited to breathe in the ocean air and recharge.
First Impression
After a scenic drive along the seacoast, I pulled into the resort and immediately relaxed as I opened my car door and was surrounded by the smell of the sea. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean from the island of New Castle, the hotel is the perfect getaway. The stunning historic building was impressive with its stark white exterior and dark red roof. It has a huge front porch with elegant pillars, and I felt like I was walking into a piece of history. Located just an hour’s drive from both Boston and Portland, Maine, it is an easy getaway.
What was check-in like?
It was only 11:30 when I got there, so I wasn’t expecting a room to be ready, but they had one! After a quick lowdown on the resort, I took the elevator up to peek at my room before heading to the spa.
My Room
The Wentworth has 161 stately guest rooms and suites, so there’s something for everyone. Let me show you around my beautiful room. I stayed in room #436, in a King Water View room.
My room had a comfortable king size bed with plush bedding, four fluffy pillows, and a light comforter.
The room had a writing desk, large television, a sitting area with a small table and 2 chairs, alarm clock, and phone.
My favorite thing about the room was the view. Look how beautiful it was! I also liked that the windows opened up, allowing the smell of the ocean to come into the room.
One disappointment was the room didn’t have a book that told about the resort, so I had no clue what time checkout was, when the restaurant served breakfast, or how late the pool was open. I prefer to have that information available in my room so I don’t have to call the front desk or look online.
My Bathroom
My bathroom had beautiful marble floors and counter space that was fine for one person. It had a shower/tub combo. The hotel provides a blow dryer, iron, ironing board, and even an in-room safe. They also provide some cozy robes in case you want to lounge around.
When I checked in, they only had a room next to the elevator, but I chose to take that one so I could get ready for the spa, but looking back I would have chosen one farther away since it was a little loud in the evening.
Spa
Since I was here for relaxation, I practically ran to the spa for the two treatments I’d booked. The hotel has an 8,500 square foot spa area. They offer so many amazing treatments: body wraps, facials, makeup services, manicures, waxing, and more.
After checking in, I went to the women’s locket room to change into a soft robe and slippers. It was honestly the most comfortable robe I’ve ever worn in a spa.
Then I went into the lounge to wait for my treatments. The lounge is a small room that was more like a waiting room than a spa lounge. It had the basics…tea, lemon water, and some nuts and dried fruit. It didn’t have lounge chairs, and it wasn’t a place where you would linger after your treatments. I was expecting a bit more since it has such a great spa.
My first appointment was a mini Spa-cation, which consisted of a 25-minute facial and a 25-minute warm oil scalp massage. It was one of the best facials I had in a long time. Lindsay had such a light touch and my skin felt amazing afterwards.
Next up was a Hot and Cold Stone Massage. My masseuse, Carol, had strong hands and could find the areas in my back that most needed attention.
The massage was so unique because it not only used warm stones, but it also alternated using ice cold stones. You would think this would not be fun, but it felt amazing, especially on my head and face. I love trying new treatments and was so glad I chose this one.
Time for lunch at SALT
After all that pampering, I was starving! I went down to the hotel restaurant, SALT, and sat in the lounge. It has comfortable high-top tables and is dimly lit, so I felt fine sitting there alone.
The restaurant offers a seasonal menu with fresh, local ingredients. There are four dining areas, so you never feel crowded. You can sit at the live chef’s bar, their lively lounge the main dining area, and private enclaves for private parties. Take a peek at their menu.
I started with a Snipped Basil Lime Ricky, with Tito’s vodka, Chambord, lime juice, orange juice, and a freshly snipped basil bud.
For lunch I had a chopped salad topped with lobster. The salad had sun dried tomatoes and a slice of Gorgonzola cheese.
Marina
After lunch, my next stop was to explore the beautiful resort grounds. It was lovely to be surrounded by the ocean. The Wentworth has a 170-slip marina.
The views from the marina were incredible.
I couldn’t help but sit for a while and just take in the view while breathing in the ocean air. It was such a treat!
Pool
Next stop…the pool!! The Wentworth has 2 gorgeous pools…one indoor and one outdoor…allowing for year-round swimming.
The indoor pool was gorgeous and was flooded with natural light! The water was 83 degrees and I loved that I was the only person in there so I was able to swim laps for a while. There were plenty of chairs and chaise loungers. The resort offers nice large towels for their guests. They also have an indoor whirlpool.
Outdoor Whirlpool
The outdoor whirlpool was beautiful and so relaxing…I loved it! Soothing spa music plays in speakers around you as you soak. The whirlpool overlooks the tennis court, so I’m not sure if that would be distracting.
Sauna
The women’s locker room has a dry sauna, so I went in for my final bit of relaxation for the day. I appreciate how clean it is and that they provide cold water and towels. It was the perfect way to end my spa day!
There were so many sitting areas around the hotel. There was a software conference going on and there were people working throughout the hotel, but it didn’t feel crowded.
If the weather was warmer, I would have loved to head to the front porch to have a cup of tea (or wine) and read my book.
Another favorite spot is this gazebo.
Imagine sneaking in here to read?
Room Service for Dinner
After a full day of relaxation, the only thing I wanted to do was put on my pj’s and veg out in my cozy room. The resort offers room service, so I grabbed the menu and had trouble deciding since there were so many yummy options. To start, I had oven roasted oysters with creamed baby spinach, artichokes, bacon, and fontina. (although I’m not sure if there was spinach and artichokes).
I also had an Umbria wood-fired flatbread pizza with wild mushrooms, asiago cream, tartufo oil, and arugula.
If you’re here during warmer months there are more dining options such as…
Latitudes Waterfront Restaurant
The Wentworth by the Sea has another lovely restaurant that is located by the marina. It would be the perfect place to have a meal or cocktails during warm weather months. I’m pretty sure they’re open until October.
Latitudes Pool Bar
You can also dine poolside at the Latitudes Pool Bar. After a swim, head over to have a salad, sandwich, light meal, or a tasty cocktail. Opened from spring to fall.
Want to unwind with a game of tennis?
The resort offers a new tennis court connected to the spa that is available to all guests. It is available on a first come, first serve basis. The resort provides rackets and balls.
Gym
The resort has a 24-hour gym with cardio machines and weights…everything you need for a good workout.
Breakfast
I couldn’t wait to go down and have some breakfast. I don’t usually have breakfast, but I had heard so much about how good it was so I went down to SALT to have a look for myself. The resort didn’t have their usual buffet breakfast, so I got to order off the menu. Because I am a Marriott Rewards member, I was given a $14 voucher, so I only had to pay for what went over that. The dining room of SALT is lovely.
I decided to continue with lobster by ordering eggs Benedict with lobster. I can’t believe how much lobster they put on it!

Who would I recommend this hotel to?
The hotel has New England classy elegance, and would make the perfect setting for a couple’s getaway, yet it is casual and welcoming that I would be completely comfortable bring my kids with me. It would also be a fun place to spend a girls’ spa weekend.
