Follow along with me on my day

There is so much to see, so I decided to be right at Old Town Trolley when it opened at 9:00 am. Exploring St. Augustine is a breeze with the Old Town Trolley and is the perfect way to experience all the charm and history of the nation’s oldest city. With convenient stops at iconic landmarks, the trolley makes it easy to explore each destination at your own pace. Your driver is not only getting you to each spot, are also your knowledgeable tour guides. If you want to get off and explore at a stop you can do so, or you can choose to remain on the tour and continue learning about the town. Here is what I did at my favorite stops:

Old Jail

Old Jail Museum

Step back in time and learn about law enforcement history at this historic jailhouse. Guided tours feature fascinating stories about its past, complete with eerie tales of the inmates who once lived there. The preserved cells and artifacts give visitors a chilling glimpse into 19th-century justice. Some facts that will stick with you is that death row cells face the galley’s where prisoners are hung, so they can see their fate. It is also sad to see the names carved in the walls of the death row cells. You will get chills as you walk in to the cells after hearing the stories.

Oldest Store Museum

As you step through the doors, you’ll be transported to a time when steam-driven tractors were the latest innovation and health elixirs promised miraculous cures. The museum’s extensive collection includes vintage farm equipment, corsets, tonics, and even a goat-powered washing machine. The costumed guides don’t just show you these items; they demonstrate them, providing a hands-on understanding of early 20th-century life.

Potter’s Wax Museum

Potter’s Wax Museum

Known as America’s first wax museum, this attraction features incredibly lifelike wax figures of historical icons, celebrities, and fictional characters. It’s a great spot for snapping fun photos and learning a bit about each figure’s backstory. I liked that there were more historical figures than celebrities, like you usually see at wax museums. It is not only entertaining, but also educational.

Castillo de San Marcos

Castillo de San Marcos

This centuries-old fortress is a symbol of St. Augustine’s resilience and history. Visitors can explore its well-preserved walls, take in stunning waterfront views, and enjoy historical reenactments that bring its fascinating past to life.

Villa Zorayda Museum

Villa Zorayda Museum

Inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Spain, this Gilded Age mansion is an architectural marvel. The museum houses an eclectic collection of art and antiques, offering a unique glimpse into the opulent lifestyles of its original owners.

Lightner Museum

Lightner Museum

Housed in the former Alcazar Hotel, this museum showcases an impressive collection of 19th-century art, decorative items, and relics. Stroll through its beautiful halls and admire everything from Tiffany glass to Victorian furniture.

Café Alcazar

While in the Lightner Museum, I also had the pleasure of dining at Café Alcazar, which was once the pool at the hotel. It was so fun sipping champagne and listening to someone play the guitar while enjoying a great meal.

St. Augustine Distillery

St. Augustine Distillery

A must-visit for spirits enthusiasts, this distillery offers free tours where visitors can see how small-batch whiskey, gin, and vodka are made. It was so fun to sample their handcrafted drinks like a mojito, old fashioned, and gin and tonic.

San Sebastian Winery

San Sebastian Winery

Perfect for wine lovers, this winery provides complimentary tours and tastings of their locally produced wines. We enjoyed sampling 6 different wines. Our tour guide was knowledgeable about the wine and the way the grapes are grown locally.

Fountain of Youth National Archeological Park

Fountain of Youth National Archeological Park

This park is more than just a legendary spring — it’s a 15-acre waterfront attraction brimming with history, culture, and natural beauty. Make sure you drink from the fountain, find a beautiful peacock, and watch a cannon being fired.

Tips for a great day

Buy Tickets Online: You’ll save some money if you purchase your tickets online instead of at the booth. Plus, it saves you time when you arrive!

Start Early in the Day: The first trolley rolls out around 9 AM, and getting an early start means you’ll beat the crowds and the afternoon heat.

Hop Off at the Must-See Stops: With over 20 stops, it’s tempting to ride the whole loop without getting off. But trust me, you’ll want to explore on foot.

Use the Free Parking Lot: If you’re driving in, Old Town Trolley offers free parking at their location on San Marco Avenue. It’s a great perk in a town where parking can be tricky!

Bring Water & Sunscreen: St. Augustine is gorgeous, but Florida sun is no joke. Stay hydrated and protect yourself from those rays, especially if you’re sitting on the open-air trolley seats.

Plan Your Day Out: Don’t just wing it… plan your day out and decide what stops are worth getting off at.

Be Prepared for Crowds: This is one of the most popular tours in town, so expect a full trolley, especially on weekends. There were lots more spaces on the trolley in the morning, but in the afternoon (around 4:00) I had to wait for the next trolley because a few were full.
