Takeout Kit Review

I often talk about the connection between food and discovering new cultures.  Being Portuguese, where food dictates everyday life, I know you can learn a ton about a culture by eating their food and even more when you have the chance to prepare it yourself.  We were so thrilled to have the chance to try Takeout Kit, a meal kit service that specializes in food from around the globe.  This meal kit is perfect if you want to get out of your comfort zone and try something you never thought you would be able to cook.  My daughter and I loved cooking our dish for the family, and it would also make for a fun date night or a girls’ get-together.

What did we cook?

Takeout Kits gave us a nice selection of dishes to try out.  I let my girls choose the one they wanted and they decided on:

 Vietnamese Pho Noodle Soup.

I was thrilled because I’ve been wanting to try pho for so long.  Turns out I’ve been pronouncing it wrong all along since it’s “fuh” not “fo” like I’d been saying it.  I’m glad the directions cleared that up for me.  Making pho usually takes all day to prepare but Takeout Kits has created a version that takes less than an hour.

What’s included?

We were so excited to open our box because it was so heavy and we didn’t expect there to be so much included.  Check out what’s inside!

Since it was a dish we’ve never tried before, we were thrilled they gave background information on the dish.

I love that they included a map to show where Vietnam is.  We talked about the history of our country’s relationship with Vietnam and how my father was a sergeant in the Army during the war.

We looked at the pictures and all agreed it would be amazing to travel there someday.

The box included a detailed recipe card with pictures and easy-to-follow directions. There was also a list of necessary kitchen supplies and suggestions for optional fresh add-ins and drink pairings.

Takeout Kit uses high quality and hard-to-find global ingredients that have minimal prep involved. What did ours contain?

Rice noodles

Mushrooms

Tofu

What is in this adorable sachet?

Pho broth concentrate, herb blend, and whole spice sachet

And what’s in this cute takeout box?

Sriracha chili sauce, hoisin sauce, rock sugar, and lime juice packets

Fish sauce

There was even Vietnamese candy!

Family fun for everyone!

My husband and youngest daughter had gone camping the night before and were both exhausted so my oldest daughter and I told them we were going to make them a nice Vietnamese meal.  We loved making this meal together and the directions were so simple she didn’t need my help at all.  I love that the prep work is done for you and the meal came together in about 45 minutes.  We had planned on making this meal in about two weeks after we were done with several trips, but we couldn’t wait to try it so we ended up making it the very night it arrived.  I love that the kit gives you the chance to wait up to two months to cook it.

Here are some shots of us cooking.

Take a look at our Vietnamese Pho! I like that everyone could customize their bowl to their liking.  All of our plates looked different. We decided to use fresh shrimp instead of tofu but in the end, we wished we had made two different batches so we could try both.

To accompany our pho, we made Vietnamese shrimp spring rolls that I’ve been dying to make. As suggested, we paired our meal with a pale ale.
