CHECK-IN
After a five-hour flight from Boston and a 1 1/2 hour car ride, this quaint hotel felt like we’d reached paradise. Checking into the Royal by Rex Resort was such a pleasure. We were immediately greeted with a rum punch, a cold towel, and a handshake. This charming hotel is elegant, yet comfortable enough that the kids felt welcomed. On our way to our room we were given a tour of the hotel and showed where the restaurants were. Since it is a smaller resort (96 suites) the staff gets to know you and they make you feel like you are home. I loved how everyone asked the girls what their names were and shook their hands.
OUR SUITE
When we walked into our suite we were in awe of the size. Sheer curtains framed the entrance to the bedroom. The bed was beautifully decorated with petals and the bathroom had flowers on all the towels and counters. It was breathtaking. The living room was set up with two comfortable twin beds and was spacious enough so everyone had room to spread out. I was expecting some cots thrown in our room but the girls loved having their own room.
Check out the view from our patio
Our large patio overlooked the Caribbean Sea and had two padded lounge chairs. The gorgeous view was the perfect way to start our day.
At night it was so peaceful listening to the waves crash onto the shore.
BEACH
The Royal by Rex Resort is situated on a long stretch of gorgeous Reduit Beach. There was never a lack of beach chairs and they all sat under thatched huts so you could get some shade. The water was crystal clear and the sand was golden. There were several people selling coconut water and chicken roti (a local dish) on the beach but they were all very kind and after a simple “No, thank you” they would walk away after wishing you a nice day. We ended each day with a long walk down the beach while the girls collected shells. It was a peaceful way to settle in for the night.
POOL
The hotel has a gorgeous pool just steps from the beach. The swim-up bar is a favorite among the hotel guests. There is a section where you can walk into the bar without getting wet and couches line the edge. There are stools in the water so you don’t have to leave the cool water to get a drink. They had a great selection of cocktails and my girls especially liked their fruit smoothies. The afternoon we arrived was raining but the girls still wanted to swim so my husband and I sat in the bar area while the girls swam around us. It was the best of both worlds. Troy was the friendliest bartender and he made everyone laugh. He was so good to the girls (even after one of them spilled their smoothie minutes after he made it.) We all loved the pool and swam in it throughout the day. There are covered bridges you can swim under and a rock formation in the deep end where you can sit. There were times when we were the only ones in the pool. The staff was meticulous in cleaning it each day.
RESTAURANTS
The hotel has 3 restaurants and 3 bars.
The complimentary breakfast was wonderful. It offers fresh fruit, omelets, pancakes, waffles, pastries, cheese, and much more. The food is fresh and there are many local options.
Chic: The restaurant definitely holds up to its name. It has elegant décor and is a fine dining experience. It is elegant, yet still appropriate for children.
L’Epicure: Another fine dining opportunity is in this beautiful open-air restaurant. It is located next to the beach and has an a la cart menu. It specializes in creole cuisine.
RESORT GROUNDS
The well-tended grounds offer peaceful spots to relax and enjoy the tropical flowers and sea air. The paths wind around manicured lawns with palm trees and gardens. There are amazing views of the mountains all around you, reminding you that St. Lucia is a lush, tropical paradise. The resort is also conveniently located next to restaurants and is within walking distance to a downtown area.
SPA
If you are looking for some additional pampering, a trip to the spa would be a treat. They provide many different types of treatments in a luxurious spot. I wish I had time to experience the spa but we were too busy playing in the sunshine.
Kid’s Club
Rexplorers: This Kid’s Club gives parents the opportunity to have some alone time while the kids have fun. We didn’t get the chance to experience it since it only operates on weekdays but if we had been there I’m sure my girls would have loved to give it a try. They ask that you make reservations for the kid’s club at the reception desk when you check-in.
Our stay could not have been more perfect. The genuine personalities of the staff made our stay feel like home. I would recommend this resort for families as well as couples seeking a romantic getaway. It really is a piece of paradise.
