Wilbur’s of Maine is a classic Maine staple, and during our media trip to Freeport we had the chance to tour their Freeport factory. I know, I know…it’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it. After some arm twisting, we figured we’d take one for the team and force ourselves to go eat some chocolate…are you kidding??? We actually ran to the factory!
We started our tour learning a bit about Tom and Catherine, the founders of this this family-owned company, and their journey of building a successful chocolate factory. What kid in this world has not dreamed of candy-making as their career! Their son, Andy, took over the company in 2016 and has continued to make it one of the most loved candy shops in Maine. While learning about the company, we got to sample some tasty pieces of Heaven!
After putting on our hair nets and looking fabulous, we headed behind the scenes to see where the magic happens!
We watched some of the experts making delicious creations like these hats for Mother’s Day.
Now it was our turn to have some fun. We felt like the episode of I Love Lucy where she’s working the conveyor belt of the chocolate factory…lol. We got to watch them make some chocolate covered pretzels and then it was our turn…making our own chocolate covered Oreos!
Another fun stop was the room where they were making chocolate covered blueberries. It was such a cool process! And the outcome…wild Maine blueberries covered perfectly in milk chocolate. Lets just say I brought home a bag and I’m hiding it from the kids!
Our final stop was a must…time to SHOP! There was no way I could leave without buying some sweet treats for my girls so I spent some time walking around their shop. Besides chocolate, there are also fun items like stuffed lobsters,
And Maine Mud,
But we were here for one thing…chocolate!
It’s hard to choose between all the molded shapes but I decided on a chocolate music symbol for one daughter and a chocolate snow mobile for the other. They loved them and said they were their favorite souvenir I brought home from Maine.
Look at how adorable this LL Bean boot is!
Tips for a great visit:
Check out their website for dates of factory tours, craft events, and special events.
They even do birthday parties and events here. How fun would that be!

A warm thank you to Wilbur’s Of Maine for having us as guests of your factory. I will never look at a piece of chocolate again without thinking of all the care that is put into making it. I can’t wait to bring my girls the next time we are in Freeport. As always, all experiences and opinions are 100% that of MyTravelingKids.com.
