Yoga Nidra

In the last year, I have become more and more interested in finding methods for relaxation (meditation, deep breathing, etc) and have been wanting to devote more time into doing it.  It seems like such a simple task, but in yoga, I can’t seem to ever turn my mind off during savasana.  So, I figured since I have nothing but time on my hand, along with a ton of anxiety, I would expand my search.  First stop…YOGA NIDRA.

WHAT IS YOGA NIDRA?

Through the use of body sensing, breath awareness, guided imagery and other practices, you are systematically guided on a meditation journey. You remain in a state of relaxed awareness, but not sleep.

HAVE I DONE IT BEFORE?

Yes.  I actually love doing it at home when my friend Becky leads them in a salon that has a salt cave.  (Local friends…if you haven’t done this you NEED to check it out!  Email me for more info.)  It is so relaxing! A few weeks ago, Becky offered a virtual class so I was able to do it from my own living room.

WHAT PROPS DO YOU NEED FOR IT?

You don’t need much, but it’s good to have some to have some items that will help you relax such as a bolster, pillow, or blanket.  If you are doing it at home, you’ll want to find a quiet place where you won’t hear any noises that distract you.  Headphones would have helped me since I could hear both of my girls talking to friends on their phones in their room.  I also like to have it dark when I do it.  Maybe an eye mask would be useful if doing it during the day.  Here was my setup during my virtual yoga nidra with Becky:

WHAT IS IT LIKE?

The first time I did it I have to admit that I didn’t get much out of it because I was in a negative frame of mind, was skeptical, and not able to focus.  Since then, every time I’ve done it, I’ve loved it.

First step is to get comfortable.  Yoga nidra is performed lying down, so get cozy in a position you can stay in for at least a half hour.  Then you just focus on the voice and let your mind do the rest.

Many people fall asleep while doing it, but I never have.  I don’t think I would fall asleep during a class because I’m too self-conscious, but I could see myself doing it at home alone.  If thoughts come in your mind, acknowledge   them and push them away.  Try not to judge yourself for having outside thoughts.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF YOGA NIDRA?

Decrease stress

Create a feeling of clarity

Decreases anxiety

Helps ease insomnia

Makes you more focused

Creates a feeling of calmness and inner peace
