An Art-Lover’s Trip to Rockland, Maine, Day 2

I woke up early at the Berry Manor Inn, made myself a cup of coffee, and jumped back in bed to enjoy it by the fire.  (Hey…when my kiddos are not around, I take every chance at relaxation!)

After a delicious breakfast at the inn, we headed to the Friends of Maine Coastal Islands Wildlife Refuge Gallery.  Their mission is to help conserve, protect, and enhance the rich diversity of coastal habitats, seabirds, and other wildlife in Maine.

They have a fantastic map of seabird nesting islands off the coast of Maine.  I often forget just how vast the coastline is.  In fact, Maine has more coastline than California!

There were beautiful works of art.  I loved this wooden piece of clouds with the moon peeking out.

But this mermaid was my favorite!

Fundy Bay Myth

There were so many colorful pieces.

They have a fun educational area outside that kids will love to play in…climbing on rocks, rowing a boat, and helping find safe spots for nests and eggs.

Next we were fortunate to have a private tour of the Farnsworth Museum. It has 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 15,000 works in its collection.

I’m a huge fan of Andrew Wyeth, and was thrilled to see so many of his art pieces here.  Some of my favorites were:

Sea Dog Study
Adrift
Charlie Ervine

I was also happy to see this LOVE sculpture, which is from the same artist, Robert Indiana, that did the piece in NYC.

This glass sculpture of lobster claws was also very captivating.

There were so many amazing pieces of art!

Our final art stop in Rockland was the Caldbeck Gallery, which represents artists with connections to Maine.

This lovely gallery was so beautiful and filled with gorgeous pieces of art.  I loved this colorful piece.

As well as these:

After our day of exploring galleries, we walked along the water on our way to lunch.

There is artwork all over Rockland!

We had an amazing lunch at Archers on the Pier.  I’d love to return one day for dinner on the deck. I loved meeting owner, Lynn Archer, and can not stop thinking about the lobster melt I had…talk about perfection!

I had such a lovely time in Rockland and can’t believe I haven’t visited here before.  Everyone I met was so welcoming and you can tell they all care so much about this gorgeous town.  I can’t wait to return to the midcoast with my family to explore more of this beautiful coastline.

A warm thank you to everyone that took time out of their schedule to make this trip a success!
