10 Amazing Things that Happen on Vacation

Travel can be expensive, time-consuming, and stressful.  So why do people bother doing it? There is something magical about getting away from everything and embracing the unknown. The following are 10 things that I notice happen when we are on vacation:

1.     CELL PHONES LOSE IMPORTANCE. I hate to admit it but when I’m home I can be pretty glued to my cellphone.  I am constantly checking emails and getting online to research different topics.  However, on vacation I can care less where my phone is! Sometimes I even go days without taking it out of my purse and it is the best feeling to be in the moment with my family.

2.    VIDEO GAMES DISAPPEAR.  Since the kids bring several electronics with them on vacation to play with on the plane, I expect they will play with them throughout the trip.  This rarely happens.  On some trips, it never comes out of their suitcase.  There are so many new things to discover that our kids would rather go out to the beach to look for shells or build a sandcastle that electronics lose their interest.

New York City is one of most perfect destinations for families.  You can never run out of things to do and there is something fun for all members of the family.  As a born and raised New Yorker, NYC holds my heart!  The following are my Top 10 Things to Do in NYC with Kids:

1.     MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY: Every time we travel there we make it our first stop.  This museum has the best dinosaur exhibits of any museums we’ve been to.  Our favorite sections are: Hall of Ocean Life, Asian Mammals, Hall of Asian Peoples, African Mammals, and African Peoples.

Ios, Greece

Ios, Greece. Plan an amazing day trip from Santorini for your family.

While in Santorini, we had one night to slip away for some time alone.  Although Mykonos was my first choice, the distance from our island would eat away at our time so we decided to go to the small island of Ios.  My only apprehension was that Ios is known as the party island of the Greek Isles and hundreds of 20-year-olds flock to the island to party the night away.  Being that we were celebrating my 40th, it was the opposite of what I was looking for.  I was happy to find that these partiers spend the entire day sleeping off their hangovers and the island would be all ours!

mem7

Whenever my family returns from vacation, I like to surround us with memories we’ve made on our trip.  Souvenirs are great, but I’m not going to put salt and pepper shakers of the Eiffel Tower on my kitchen table.  So instead of displaying your “My mom went to Italy and all I got was this lousy t-shirt” souvenir, take a look at these creative ways to display memories from your travels.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire is one of my favorite coastal towns in New England.  The town is dear to my heart because we had our wedding reception in town and since then have created many family memories here. Portsmouth is only an hour north of Boston and just over the bridge from Maine.

When looking for a hotel in Portsmouth, location is key.  The Port Inn is centrally located and has amazing accommodations for the entire family.  Please click below to read all about our stay at the Port Inn.
