Review of Harlow’s Harvest

Since we’ve begun social isolation, I can’t get my daughter out of the kitchen.  She’s been trying new recipes and surprising us with delicious treats.  However, we’re starting to run out of ideas over here, so this box could not have come at a better time.  Harlow’s Harvest is a monthly cooking subscription box for kids and we were thrilled to work with them. We were so excited when we saw out box on our front porch and couldn’t wait to get a peek inside.

What do I love about Harlow’s Harvest?

I love that this box teaches life skills and encourages a lifelong love of cooking.  It promotes healthy eating habits and even teaches them about budgeting.   I also love that they hold a strong emphasis on history, geography, STEM, and math. Kids can track their progress because each month they will receive a new academy pin for their apron.  I also love that Harlow’s Harvest believes that cooking and eating is a worldly experience, so with this box subscription, you have the opportunity to experience the world without leaving your home.

What age is this box geared towards?

Harlow’s Harvest is geared for kids ages 4-15. Younger kids will have to have a parent present while cooking in the kitchen, and older students will be able to prepare the meals for themselves. This is a wonderful activity to do together as a family.

What comes in each box?

Here is what we received in ours:

Our theme was TEA TIME!

Sunday was Mother’s Day and my girls know how much I love tea, so my they had the sweetest idea to make this box for that day so we can celebrate together. It was such a nice thing for us to do as a family.

I love that this box was not just a bunch of recipes, but rather an experience that we can do together.  We couldn’t wait to have our high tea and look how amazing it came out…

So, what recipes did they provide?

SCONES WITH CLOTTED CREAM

The card gave a simple recipe for scones that you can adapt to whatever flavors you want.  Ours didn’t rise, but they still tasted delicious.

It also gives the recipe for clotted cream.

ENGLISH TEA SANDWICHES

The card included two different recipes.  One for a dill, cucumber, cream cheese sandwich

And an egg, watercress, paprika sandwich.

CHERRY TOMATO TARTLETS

The recipe card taught us how to make our own tart dough. It also gave suggestions for different savory tarts (roasted asparagus and cheese, peas and herbs, and corn tomato) as well as sweet tarts (mixed berries, apple walnut, and salted caramel).  My girls decided to also make sweet ones.

TEA TIME JAM

There were also some informative cards:

Most important card…HOW TO WASH YOUR HANDS!  I couldn’t think of a better time to have this card.  It would be a great card to leave by the bathroom.

It gave a HISTORY OF HIGH TEA. We’ve done high tea before so it was nice to see its origins.

It also gave a great lesson on HOW TO SET UP YOUR HIGH TEA STAND.

DIFFERENT TEAS Gives description of chamomile, mint, and lavender teas.

It even gives a science experiment: HOMEMADE RAIN GAUGE

A SHOPPING LIST

A BUDGET CHART.  This would be wonderful to use as a math extension.

Check out their aprons!

The box also included 2 Harlow’s Harvest aprons, which they loved decorating and will get lots of use.

Finally, they included 3 silicon tart molds.

What is the cost of the subscription box?

Monthly $23

6-month membership $21/month (save $12) ($126 bi-yearly)

12-month membership $19/month (save $48) ($228 yearly)
