What’s On Your Travel Bucket List?

“We grow great by dreams. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nurse them through bad days until they bring them to the sunshine and light, which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.”
– W. Wilson

Many of us are taking a pause from traveling, but that isn’t going to stop us from daydreaming.  Now is the perfect time to create your Travel Bucket List so you can do a little daydreaming about your next adventure.  After all…#wewilltravelagain!

Why did I start my list?

When I was in college I had an English professor that was the stereotypical hippy, turtleneck wearing, book loving, ‘Let’s have class outside’ kind of professor. I absolutely LOVED him! (Ok…it helped that he was also really cute!) He had a philosophy that everyone should have a Bucket List. However, he called it a Life List because it should be about your life, not your death. He suggested always having 100 items on your list at all time. When you accomplish one, you need to replace it with another.  As the years went on, a new list was created…my Travel Bucket List.

Why should you have a Bucket List?

There are so many reasons.  Here are a few…

Everyone should have dreams and something to strive towards.

It helps build inspiration for vacations.

It’s great to look back on what you’ve done in your life.  I actually keep a journal where I track all the things I cross off my list.

It’s nice to have some dreams that may be financially unattainable because you never know!

How do you go about creating one?

Be specific with your list.  Don’t just say “Go to England.”  What will you do there? See the Changing of the Guards? Go to a pub? Listen to Big Ben? What do you see yourself specifically doing? Here are some prompts to help create your list:

Where is someplace you’ve always wanted to go?

What activity have you always wanted to try?

What skills do you wish you had?

What are some of your fears?

Is there something special that someone you know has done that you wish you could do?

What is something you don’t think you would ever do?

Where did you always want to go as a child?

When you are old, what do you think you will have wished you had done?

What would you most want to do with your spouse/child/parent/friend?

If you had $1 million, what would you do with it?

What are some things on my list?

Here are a few of my favorites:

Meditate on a ruin in Machu Picchu.

Drink a pint in a pub in London. Done!

Listen to bagpipes in Scotland.

Swim in a cave. Done!

Do a cooking class in Tuscany.

Run across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Take my girls to the castle in my dad’s village in Portugal.

Kiss the Blarney Stone. Done!

Sleep in an igloo.

Go to a spa in Arizona and have a hot stone massage.

Go on a hot air balloon ride over a vineyard in Napa.

Swim in the blue Lagoon in Iceland. Done!

What are some things you would put on your Bucket List?

  1. I have a travel bucket list. I love to travel if it was up to me I’d be going to Australia and New Zealand in the next year. That probably will not happen but it is on my bucket list.

I heard New Zealand was amazing for it’s caving. I’d love to do that but not the ones where you have to squeeze in too tight. I’m holding my breath just thinking about it! 🙂

  2. I have had a bucket list since I was little. I think it is a great way to stay focused and motivated to keep striving for more. If we don’t have hopes we become complacent.

  3. My bucket list is just like generalized thoughts. Just like what you said, “Go to England..” I have never thought of doing it in a more drill down kind of list. Thanks for the idea. I’m going to edit my bucket list!

I’m a visual person so I think it just lets me pictures something specific I’d be doing there. Have fun making your list!

My husband is really brave but he was so scared to swim in the cave and got out as soon as he could!

  4. I’ve actually done a few of the items on your bucket list. Regarding the afternoon tea … I highly recommend Harrods in London! I have a bucket list that I review and update frequently, and you’re right … it does give me lots to look forward to.

I don’t really do the bucket list thing. I think I will start one though and have it hang on my wall (via the whiteboard). It might be a family bucket list though.

What a great idea!! I love the idea of making it a family Bucket List! I have friends that make a summer bucket list at the end of the school year. I may borrow your idea!!
