Boston Museum of Fine Art: Mummies, Monet, and More

When you think of a fine arts museum you may imagine boring halls filled with old portraits, security shushing people, and bored children trailing behind their parents.  This is not the case at the Boston Fine Arts Museum. Not only do they have hundreds of famous paintings, they also have mummies, statues, jewelry, and weapons that will capture anyone’s attention.  The Boston Museum of Fine Art, with more than 450,000 works of art, is difficult to see in one day, but with a little planning, you can see it all.  The museum is separated into different wings such as Art of Ancient World, Art of Asia, Oceania and Africa, And Contemporary Art. Let me take you around to see our favorite areas of the museum:

Your experience of the MFA begins before you even walk inside.  The museum has some really unique pieces of art right outside.  These doll heads are my daughters’ favorites!

I personally love Indian Hunter (Paul Manship, 2002) as the hunter and Pronghorn Antelope (and Paul Manship, 2002) as his prey.

Emerson Inn, Rockport, MA

What was going to be a mother/daughter overnight trip to Rockport turned out to be a solo trip because of sports and field trips. As much as I would have loved their company, it’s also nice to have some alone time to relax and recharge before the end of the school year.  I can’t think of a better place to spend some quality “Me Time,” than the historic oceanfront Emerson Inn, in Rockport, Massachusetts.

Studio Allston, Boston

With so many hotels to choose from in Boston, it’s often hard to decide where to stay. The other night we had the pleasure of staying at Studio Allston and it was the most colorful hotel we’ve ever stayed at.  The artistic vibe is played out throughout the hotel and your eyes are drawn from one spot to the next.  It was the perfect location to escape the noise of the city, is only 15 minutes from downtown Boston, and is a short walk to Harvard.  It was so easy to drive here…and that’s coming from someone who usually would rather have a root canal than drive in a city!

The Illusionists

The Illusionists

Live from Broadway

If this amazing show hits your area, I would highly recommend going to see it!  Not only is it hysterical, but you will have your mind blown at all the tricks they perform.  It will have you at the edge of your seat and the entire family will love it! We just caught the show while it was in Boston last weekend and we had a blast!

The illusionists include:

Colin Cloud (The Deductionist)

Raymond Crowe (The Unusualist)

Paul Dabeck (The Trickster)

Jonathan Goodwin (The Daredevil)

An Ha Lim (The Manipulator)

Red Jacket Beach Resorts in Cape Cod

Red Jacket Beach Resorts in Cape Cod

Cape Cod is one of my favorite New England beach destinations that’s filled with the perfect mix of relaxation and family fun.  While on the Cape last month, we had the pleasure of staying at the Red Jacket Beach Resort. (Click here for the full review.)  The best thing about staying at a Red Jacket Resort is you can use the amenities of all five Red Jacket Resorts.  This makes planning so easy and gives you endless options of fun activities. While we were there we were able to tour the other four resorts, and we were so impressed with each one.  We even went back to a few of them the next day to play.  Here are some of the things we liked best about each resort:

Blue Water Resort

The resort is set on a gorgeous white sand beach.

Pleasant Bay Village Resort, Cape Cod

After a long school year full of homework, studying for tests, and early mornings, my girls deserved some fun in the sun.  So where did we escape to?  To the beautiful beaches of Cape Cod of course! Our first stop was to Pleasant Bay Village Resort in the quaint town of Chatham.  This family-owned resort is in the perfect central location in the elbow of Cape Cod.

Cape Codder Resort and Spa

At times I like to travel with just one of my daughters so we can spend some quality one-on-one time together.  Recently, I was so pleased to be able to stay at the Cape Codder Resort and Spa, in Hyannis, with my youngest.  After looking at the website and seeing the hotel has a water park, she could hardly stop talking about it.  The hotel did not disappoint and we had a fabulous time playing throughout our stay.  The hotel is located near several beautiful Cape Cod beaches, and near many restaurants and adorable shop.

My First Night Away…ALONE!

Bass Rocks Ocean Inn mytravelingkids.com

The day is finally here and I’m all packed up to go away all by myself for the first time.  No husband and no kiddos.  I’ve put my bags in the car and grabbed the wine I’ve been chilling in the fridge.  When suddenly…Ring Ring Ring.  “Hi Mrs. Johnson.  This is the school nurse.  Would you mind coming in to pick up your daughter?  She seems to have a bit of a bellyache.” You’ve got to be kidding me!  I can’t make this stuff up.  With a sigh, the wine goes back in the fridge and I’m on my way to pick up my little cherub from school.
