Make Your Hotel Stay into a Wellness Retreat

Some vacations entail running from attraction to attraction, which result in coming home exhausted, sleep deprived, and regretful of all the junk I ate.  However, some vacations are meant for relaxation,  taking the time to recharge, and an indulgence in self-care.  Sure, it would be great to fly to Arizona to spend the night at a wellness resort, but that may not be realistic. With some creativity, you can turn any hotel stay into a wellness retreat.

Here are 10 Ways to Turn Your Hotel Stay into a Wellness Retreat:

USE THE SPA

Nothing relaxes me more than some pampering, so I try to find a hotel that has its own spa.  I like spas that offers unique treatments I haven’t tried before.  I love when they use local ingredients like blueberry massage oil when staying in Maine and salt scrubs when staying near the ocean. Book yourself a soothing treatment or two.

VISIT THE POOL

Whether you’re swimming laps or just floating around, water is sure to transport you to bliss.  I especially like to use the pool during New England winters, to remind me of warm days to come.  Don’t forget to pack a bathing suit, flip flops, and a cover-up.

USE THE SPA AMENITIES

Lots of resorts have made their spa area an experience that is meant for you to linger.  Do they offer a hot tub? Sauna? Steam room?  Lounge? Make sure you take advantage of all amenities and don’t rush out of there.  Some spas will allow you to return later in the day to use their facilities.

HIT THE GYM

Your body will feel incredible after a workout.  Does the hotel have a gym? Look for one that has both cardio equipment and free weights. Even better, see if there’s a place that offers fitness classes, like yoga!  Don’t forget to bring your sneakers and workout clothes.

WALK THE GROUNDS

Get some fresh air while traveling.  If the resort doesn’t have large grounds, is it near a beach, park, or trails?

BRING YOUR OWN SPA TREATMENTS

If your resort doesn’t have a spa, create one yourself.  Bring a face mask, hot oil treatment, or hair mask to do at night.  Need a manicure or pedicure?  Bring the supplies and take the time to paint them.  A hotel stay is the perfect time for self-care.

MAKE YOUR BATHROOM AN OASIS

Does your bathroom have a soaker tub? This is the perfect time for a bubble bath. (Just make sure the tub looks clean.  You know how picky I am about that.)  Your shower can be relaxing if you bring your favorite bath gel or body lotion.  Lounge around in the bath robe and slippers if your resort provides them.

SLEEP IN

If you have the time, snuggle up in your cozy bed and get some extra sleep.  Can’t sleep in? Make some coffee and get back in bed and watch some TV or read a magazine.  If sleeping in is not your thing, maybe get up early to see a sunrise.

DON’T FORGET TO STRETCH

Stretching is a wonderful way to relieve the stress of the day.  Although you don’t need equipment to stretch, make it even better by bringing a strap, a band, or yoga blocks.  It’s also great to have a yoga mat to give you a bit more cushion.

PREPARE YOURSELF FOR A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

I hate when I can’t sleep in a hotel.  To minimize the chances of this happening I bring my own pillow with my satin pillow case, lavender pillow spray, and Aveda Blue Oil.  I have even started bringing melatonin chews with me for sleep emergencies. I like to end my day with a hot cup of tea, so I always travel with tea bags and packets of honey.  Make sure your room has a coffee pot or kettle, and that you have a bottle of water (I never use sink water).
