Reykjavik in One Day with Kids

view of Iceland

Iceland is the new “it place” to travel to and some people are deciding to add a few days there as a layover. If you have one full day to explore Reykjavik, Iceland, the capital, you may want to get an early start because there is so much to explore in this picturesque port town.  I decided I wanted our time in the city to be about culture and our time in the countryside to be about nature. So how can you do Reykjavik in one day with kids?

Here is my itinerary for a full day of fun for the entire family:

Stop #1: Hallgrímskirkja Church

This stunning church is designed to mirror the Icelandic landscape when lava cools into basalt rocks.  Its tower can be seen from many spots throughout the city.

Although minimally decorated in the inside, the organ, with its 5272 pipes, is a sight to see.  The real treat is the view from the top.  Take the elevator up to see panoramic views of the water, city, and mountains.  The colorful houses dotting the city are so cheerful.

Stop #2: Saga Museum

Time for some Viking history.  The museum uses lifelike figures to recreate key times in Icelandic history and a complimentary audio guide tells the stories.  It may be a bit gory for young kids, but my 8 & 10-year-old thought it was really cool.  They said, “Vikings were the toughest people EVER!” I have to agree!

Stop #3: Snack time

If you’re getting hungry, you can stop somewhere for an iconic Icelandic hot dog, which are available everywhere you go.  In the mood for some ice cream instead? Joylatto makes their own ice cream in front of you using liquid nitrogen. It’s delicious and fun to see.  (Njalsgata 1, 101, Reykjavik)

Stop #4: Open Air Museum

The Open Air Museum is a wonderful way to see firsthand the way Icelandic people lived throughout the years.  It is set up into sections with over 20 houses that represent a town square, a village, and a farm.  You can walk into the different homes and see what life was like.  My favorite spot was the church.

Stop #5: Shop and eat

Time to walk around the city, do some shopping, and find a place to eat.  If you walk down towards the waterfront area the view of the water is incredible.

There are endless options for dinner.  We loved a place called Barber Bistro.  It had a modern, industrial vibe but still kid-friendly.  (Located at Laugavegur 66, Reykjavik 101, Iceland)

If you have any extra time, take a fun puffin boat tour to learn all about these spectacular birds.  Read all about our puffin tour.

Feel like relaxing in some thermal pools? Head over to the Blue Lagoon. Read all about our time there.
